Very strange and tragic accident (CNN link)

This is one of the oddest and saddest sports incidents I’ve heard of:

.

That is very sad, but is it stranger than this: http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/0608Wheelchair0608.html
.

her mom is very intellectual though…

“I am scrupulous about my children’s health,” she told the Advance. “I did not think an over-the-counter product could be unsafe.”

No over the counter products are perfectly safe no matter how you use them.

Exactly!
They’re all drugs. Herbs are drugs. You can OD on vitamins, too.
Those creams almost all contain salicylates–read Aspirin. The thing I don’t like about them is that there is no dosage control.

Well, in defense of the mom, when’s the last time anyone else heard of someone dying from an overdoes of Icy Hot? There’s a reason it’s so rare, and that’s because the product is pretty safe. I don’t know how much the girl would have had to lather on to suffer the adverse reaction, but they did say there could have been something else to speed up her absorption. Of course anything is dangerous if you take enough of it. Look at all the hypnotremia stuff last year. Apparently someone would be dumb to say they thought water was safe? I’d say cut her some slack and recognize that sometimes weird things happen.

Toxicity in younger kids is not unheard of. It’s a dose to body weight ratio. Slender female runner, large amount of cream, bad combo. You don’t hear of it much, but most people aren’t puttting that much on, but for many people the thought process is–if a little is good…!
