A couple points that were made on twitter yesterday. One was meant to be funny and goes to show you can skew data to show whatever point you want to make, “The African marathoners ore currently on a decline, the data supports it”. The other was a legitimate question that Tucker never answered, “What happened in 2001”.
Anyone have insight into the dip in 2001?

However, ability to tolerate a mundane, unpleasant workload for year after year…maybe so!

One big change i running is that the money is now in road racing and not on the track. There are a lot more road races with price money, everything from 5k to marathon. In one of the top track meets you can run under 13.00 on the 5,000 meters and get USD1,000 in prize money. On that level you can most likely shift the focus to road races and make a living.
Also younger runners are making the jump over to marathon at the age of 20, they are not following the old building from short to long mantra. Maybe something to learn for triathletes?
And we need to know more about doping.
A test for EPO was introduced at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney (Australia).
That may have nothing to do with it, it may have just been dumb luck.
But, east african running performance should be viewed with the same cynical eye for drugs and their involvement as any other sport/country. They have had their own share of scandals:
