Verizon cell phone, which one to get?

My 2-year contract with Verizon is starting again, which means I get a new phone  Either a cheapie phone for free, or one of the better phones for a discount price.

Any recommendations? I don’t want any extra features (no camera, email capabilities etc.). Just great sound quality. With my current phone people complain that the sound is terrible.

thanks!

Don’t be like me and go into the store and let yourself be seduced by all the nifty things phones can do. I bought one that plays music and takes pictures. How often do I play music or take pictures? I can’t bear to think about it. How much did I pay for all those bells and whistles? I can’t bear to think about it. I’d go online and get one of the “free” options. My guess – and others can chime in on this – is that they all have pretty consistent quality of reception.

I just replaced my Verizon phone with a Samsung. I don’t know the model number. It cost about $50 after the two year contract but before the $50 rebate. If the rebate ever shows, it is basically free.

It has a camera. I am kind of odd when it comes to phones. I use them to make phone calls. Not listen to music. Not surf the internet. Not send email. Not to send text messages. Not to make video clips. Look under Luddite in dictionary for my picture.

The reception is outstanding. The best I have ever had going clear back to the old car phone days.

Do you ever go outside major metropolitan areas or drive long distances on non-interstate highways? A phone with an analog channel might be nice in that case. By the end of your next contract the entire nation should be digital, but as of now there are still some digital dead spots when we go to our place in the country.

Just wait for the right promotion. Unless I’m absolutely forced to because my current phone dies, I’ll hold out until the right deal. I don’t think anyone should pay for a cell phone. They are only made to last a few years.

Anyways, I just went from a 3 year old LG to the Motorolla Razr V3. Two phones for free + a free bluetooth headset. It was a promotion running over the past weekend. I’m sure with the holidays coming up they’ll have some more.

I really liked the LG, and it is working fine, but some small things were starting to go wrong. I didn’t know when another good promotion would be coming around, so I went for it. I haven’t paid for a cell phone since I first got one 10 years ago.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, but occasionally travel through more remote parts of the US west, like central Oregon and parts of Arizona and Utah. The digital versus analog issue was not even on my radar screen. I just know I get lousy Verizon reception in central Oregon - but not sure if the analog/digital issue is the reason or not. Someone please help me out here.
