i know this topic comes up here and there; but have been on verge of getting sick. today in physical with doc, he tells me he can see swollen nasal passages and some drainage, meanwhile throat is getting more sore.
crap!
i’ve done the chicken soup; and have not pushed effort in training. anything else to do? i’m not above witch-craft.
also had blood in urine, don’t know what’s up with that. everytime i see this doc he scares the shit out of me. last time was potential basal cells on face, thankfully got the clearance on that but was told to reduce hours in sun (have perscription face cream now, etc).
It is possible it is just allergy related; depending on where you are. Right now in Colorado, trees, grass, and weeds are all high. Because of my allergies, I have swollen sinuses and drainage about 6 months a year.
Third for Zicam. My girlfriend works with 0-5 year-olds all day and constantly has about a dozen kids with colds around. Zicam has been a life saver since she got this job!

Paul
yes is there anything that can be done about this?
when i had poison ivy, it stuck around for nearly 8 weeks. finally, it’s all gone, but was a real bitch to deal with. doc said it was a severe allergic reatcion, and possibly now am just more sensitive. i’m blaming higher sensitivity on the PUGS! as fur just explodes off their little bodies. (ok, not really “little” bodies, as they are kind of like chubbies)
great stuff - my family all uses it except me, very effective, especially if you are really on it at first symptoms. Psoriasis for me - which is caused by a slightly hyper active auto-immune system - just goes wild whenever I use it. I scale up like a lizard. I would probably be reported by the ST fishies if I showed up for an event or master’s swim.
For most people I know with allergies, fatigue is the most troubling issue. You can take an over the counter decongestant like Sudafed for congestion, and/or an antihistamine for the drainage. The fatigue though, at least what I have found, is related to sleep apnea (sp?). The congestion related to the allergies causes me to have breathing trouble while asleep, so I really don’t get the same rest. Further, I often snore as a result of the congestion, and this wakes me up. I have talked with other allergy sufferers who have had similar issues.
So I focus on staying clear (decongested) while sleeping. I take half a 12 hour Sudafed and one Benadrly prior to bed. I also use a nasal stip. I always thought nasal stips looked totally useless, until I tried them. Now I never snore, and my sleep is much more restfull.
The one issue with the medication is that they can keep you awake. Sudafed is a stimulant. Benadryl is the active ingredient in Tylenol PM that causes sleep, but can actually effect some people like a stimulant. So you basically have to try different things until you find what works best for you.
At the onset of a cold, I use Airborne. It’s an over the counter cold remedy with large doses of vitamins and echinacea, mostly vitamin C. You’ll find it any any drugstore or grocery store with a pharmacy. Seems to work for me.
I didn’t see this post until just now. One thing a lot of people don’t think about is the ears. This is a pretty common place for infection to occur. This may sound crazy, but it has helped me tremendously over the past couple of years.
I fill my ear up wil hydrogen peroxide and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then do the other ear the same way for 10 minutes. (You have to drain the ears out, gravity usually does the job). Then I’ll gargle with some peroxide too. I do this right before bed, and then I make sure I get a great night’s sleep.
This practice when I start to “feel” sick along with regular sinus rinses has decreased the number of times I have been sick over the past 3 years.
I have also heard that if you bathe your self in hydrogen peroxide and then take a steamy hot shower that there is some positive effect, but that seems to be apocryphyl.
If there’s blood in the urine, it may still be an infection rather than an allergy. Did your doc not investigate further?
Anyway, best thing you can do is rest. Training won’t make it any better. Training won’t make it any better. Training won’t make it any better. (To remind me not to ignore my own advice!).
i’m just have a hell of a time keeping healthy lately. don’t know what’s up with that! even had some bad flare ups with the knee injury that has plagued me for 6 years. once i run & bike beyond a certain time my health just start to crumble. how do i get off this tightrope!
anyway, i digress…
i swim at Blue Ash YMCA; outdoor swimming in pool.
Do you wear a nose clip and ear plugs? i can’t survive without these.
You’re right-things just seem to fall apart sometimes. I remember reading that you were training for an IM-right? Maybe you’ve increased the distances too quickly? I know I get knee problems from pushing off the wall when I increase distance in the pool. maybe it’s a combination of everything. As you know, all this distance, intensity, stress reeks havoc on the immune system.
Swim in a pond/lake, go on long rides for fun, run in the forest-you’ll feel better- i just know it.
