Velonews tire test

The top spot going to a tubeless tire is not actually all that surprising. I gave Tom A. some Schwalbes to test when i was in sponsorship talks with them. Their tubeless tire is really fast. The reason is simple - it has no breaker belt. So, ultimately, the more rigid sidewalls are more than offset, it seems, by the lack of a breaker belt. The real question, of course, is whether or not you want to run a tire without a breaker belt with a tube. I can see why you would, but I’m also not sure it’s worth the risk.

The key hire is the head of tire development, now, at Specialized - Wolf Vorm Walde. He worked at Continental for a long time and had quite a few ideas about how to make more awesome tires. Continental was “predictably German” in their response - it was too much of a risk. Specialized had no such concerns. So he left. And got to make the tires he’d been imagining. And they are fantastic.

I just downloaded that issue the other night…and, IIRC, the tubeless tire in the top spot is 26C wide and the Turbo Cotton just below it is the 24C version. I think they even said in the text that if they’d tested the 26C Turbo Cotton, it probably would have bypassed the tubeless, especially considering that the 2 tires were within 0.1W of each other (gotta be within error of the measurement, I’d think).

Overall, I have to say on first glance the testing looks pretty good…my one pet peeve that Zinn did fall into was in stating that tubeless can potentially be faster than tubed because friction between the tube and tire is eliminated…Aarghh…“friction between them”? Really??

I’ve had this laying around for a bit:

The article is about tubeless ROAD tires…as you can see in the plot above, once over 50 psi, there doesn’t seem to be much, if any differential movement adding additional losses, right?

Exactly my point  It takes really low pressures before there’s any measurable frictional losses from using a latex tube.

I have to admit though, like a moth to a light, I’m drawn to try the S-Works Road Tubeless in 24c… but damn $100? Real quick since you’re reading this, how much of a net aero penalty would I incur for running a Specialized 24c vs an Attack 22c on my HED Jet+ wheels? IIRC, you tested this recently.
