I’m heading into Van. on Saturday and it’s been a while since I’ve been back (2003). I’ll be racing in Penticton the following weekend.
I have a bit of a coffee fetish and would like recommendations for good coffee places in Central Vancouver. I will be stayingf at The Fairmont ( the old Hotel Vancouver ) so somewhere that makes great coffee and some healthy type foods would suit fine.
Ideally , I have Cafe Nervosa ( Frasier ) type in my mind , not Starbucks.
Additionally, any new sites , restaurants , things to do would be greatly appreciated.
Any response ( or part therof ) would be greatly appreciated
Drive out to Deep Cove and hit Honey’s. Buy a strong coffee and a muffin the size of your head. It will get you all charged up to go do a hill workout on Mt Seymour, or a long run on the Baden Powell Trail…
If you drink fancy coffees and are big into latte art and that sort of thing, Cafe Artigiano is pretty popular. It’s actually pretty tough to walk very far without stumbling across either a small chain, a small independent, or two larger chains dueling it out (or some combination thereof).
This is a halfway decent resource: http://www.vancouvercoffee.ca/, and then there’s always trusty coffeegeek (hit up the West Coast forum). Also check out the Urban Spoon’s listings of indy roasters/coffee shops.
I can’t think of anything off the top of my head in that area…I think there might be 6 Sbux in the block radius around the Fairmont!
For something a bit different you might want to stroll down to Denman St. and find something there. Denman is lined with restaurants and cafes of every ethnicity you could think of.
Best coffee in town is 49th Parallel Roasters on 4th in Kits. If you’ve got a car and an extra day to explore, drive up the sea to sky towards Squamish and stop at Galileo Coffee in Britannia Beach… best coffee IN THE WORLD.

Galileo closes pretty early though. Make sure that you drive up in the morning. Or better yet, ride up in the morning- the new highway is nice.

If you are in my age group then I would recommend you do this at least twice.
For the rest of us it might be a little late to be eating a fat bomb and doing a hard climb/run
Take the Skytrain to Broadway Station - walk North on Commercial Drive (Little Italy) and either go to JJ Bean or any one of the coffee shops with a bunch of old Italian dudes hanging out in front.
If you’re not interested in a trek, I second Cafe Artigiano.
If you’re looking for health food, there are lots of great restaurants but if you want to pick up groceries/snacks head West on Robson Street to Capers, which is now owned by Whole Foods. They have healthy, eco friendly, organic, etc. foods. Not sure how good the coffee they serve is though.
As to stuff to do - the Art Gallery is right across the street and has an exhibition of Dutch Masters. I quite liked it, but art isn’t everyone’s thing. The Gallery Cafe is also a very nice place for lunch.
Stanley Park is pretty, although jammed to the gills with tourists in August so go early in the day to avoid the crowds.
For a pretty run, head North from your hotel until you hit the seawall path and then go West towards Stanley Park.
If you’re heading to Kits, you have to pay homage to Kits Pool so bring your bathing suit and goggles!

I know the area , but did not know that it was a restaurant mecca , thanks ITSEAZY.

I wil be doing some erly morning swims in the area , so will definitely hit that prior ( or after depending upon their opening time ).
We willl be driving up to Whistler or 2-3 days of solace and relaxation so will be passng by Britannia Beach and Galileo’s definitely. Should be a prime stop too as my cup will be empty by then

I appreciate the insight and recommendations Alibabwa , thanks. Little Italy was on the agenda somewhere already , so that helps.
