I am cobbling together a set of race wheels: a HED 3 rear and a 404 front. Any suggestions/what should I do about the different size valves for each and carrying a spare? (1/2 IM)
The HED 3 takes a shorter length valve and 404 needs a longer one. I heard that you really need screwed-on extenders (and relocating the valves) to get tire pressure with valve extenders for 404’s…and if I set up my spare that way and blow the rear, I would have to dimantle the valve set-up on the spare?
Get the longer extender and pre-install it on your spare as the other guy recommended. Go with the longer stem, because you can deal with a long one, but if it is too short you are screwed.
Thanks for the advice. Do you know what size would be right? I have read (here) that Problem Solvers are good, because unlike simple extenders, they relocate the valve closure to the end.
On review, it looks like valve stem cutout in the HED 3 might be large enough to accept a valve stem length that will also work on a 404, so I might not have to disassemble the spare if I flat the rear (as it would be set-up for the front 404?
I have never used the valve extenders where you relocate the valve core. I have yet to have a problem…of course now that I have said that I probably will have one. They are about 3 times the cost for the valve extenders which you remove the core, and I haven’t felt the need to spend the extra money. I get the long valve extenders…my LBS only carries two sizes, but I am not sure if that is because they only make two or not.
use a short valve for both wheels and add the extender when changing out the 404. the HED3 will not accept a long valve, you won’t be able to put in the pump head. make sure your pump head fits as well as some won’t fit the cut-out.
