Do you leave them on the tube/wheel or after inflation do you take them off? Let the discussion begin…
Leave them on…IMO. It will be almost impossible to get a good seal later.
and don’t forget to use the teflon tape
.
true that…
I’m liking the new Vittoria 62mm ones that replace the existing valve core, they also come in 40mm. So far they seem more reliable than the ones that just thread over the top of the old valve.
Agree 100% on Vittoria extenders.
Instead of starting a new thread, I’ll just tap into this one. For wheels 85mm, would people prefer to go with a longer extended / shorter stem, or a longer stem, shorter extender? Also, for 85mm, what would you say minimum rim clearance should be? aka is 100mm (total length) enough or should I be gunning for 120+mm fully extended?
Also, where are you guys getting your Vittoria extenders from?
shorter valve stem with longer (hollow) extension.
lighter and less of an unbalanced wheel.

How much you need sticking out of the rim is somewhat a function of your pump/CO2 system, you can get by with little if you have a really secure pump head. I play it safe so I don’t risk having a malfunction on race day I’d not go with minimal 15mm sticking out.
We are a dealer so I get 'em from Vittoria USA. I think we have them on the shelf at the studio if we haven’t sold them all lately if you can’t find them and are willing to mail order call me (email/phone contact info at link in my sig). I think the 62mm are brand new so unless the shop you are dealing with really stays up on high end/aero wheel gear they might not even know about them. The 40mm have been out a while.
I have Zipp 404 wheels and have found that tubes with 80mm stems work better then messing around with extenders. Deeper rims (Zipp 808s and 1080s) would require some kind of extenders. Tim

I guess I’m in the minority, but I take mine off. No problems with subsequent seals thus far. Use teflon tape. If you do have a leak, it’s not that big of a deal to take the tire off and redo the teflon. It is a big deal if you lose the extender during a ride and can’t fill air at all.
I have 808s and use an 80mm stem and then add on the 40mm Vittoria valve extender. I realize this is more stem hanging out than necessary but I’d rather deal with that than be frustrated trying to get a pump head seal out on the road.
do the Vittoria extenders require a specific type of tube to be compatiable ? Tubes i’ve got don’t have the little section that screws out, look like it’s all one piece except for the little screw-down tightener…

yes you must have removable valve cores.
sorry I always assume folks are using tubulars with deep dish race wheels & all those have removable cores, at least all the ones I’ve used.
I think Conti is the most widely distributed tube with removable core for clinchers, we also have some Hutchinsons here that do. Not sure about other brands. Oddly I don’t think the Vittoria tubes do but those tubes suck anyways in my experience.
This thread reminded me of my current build-up of a Planet X 101mm tubular wheel. Are there any other options for a valve extender this long other than Zipp? No long valve stem options with tubulars…
