Valid FTP test?

ok… I have been riding (not training) with a power tap since April and did some initial testing. I race primarily Xterra and about split my time my 60/40 (road/mtb). I am pretty much taking the approach of just riding with the power tap all through this season and accumulating a lot of data and not doing too much power specific interval work. Hopefully I can use the data once the season is over, and possibly with the help of a coach or someone who knows about creating power-based workout plans, to put together an offseason plan to increase power.

here’s my question:

I am racing the Pacific Coast Triathlon tomorrow and instead of riding my TT bike (don’t have it wired for PT), which I never ride anyway, I will be riding my Orbea Onix TDF with mini clip-ons and my power tap. I am just doing the race for a good training session and don’t care about the results at all. My plan is just to go as hard as I can on the 12 mile, rolling bike course and see what I kind of power I can put out. I know FTP is based on a 60min TT effort, but could I take the data I collect tomorrow to get any idea of my current FTP?

Thanks…

Any idea? Yeah, sure. Perfect? No. Position is off, prior swim … I guess you could plug your data into a critical power spreadsheet for a start though. Just be honest with yourself about whether it represents an honest ‘max’ effort. Garbage in, garbage out.

On that note, you may want to consider doing your power tests in a position as close to possible to that of the mtb.
