Utah Half-Ironman?

Does anyone know if this race will happen next year and if not where the possible replacement venue might be?

It think would be nice to have a IM race option in the South West say New Mexico or Arizona. Any thoughts?

Red Rocks (UT) half iron race in st george area on October 25.

Tempe (AZ) half iron race on November 9.

Lake Pleasant (or Lake unpleasant as we call it) half iron race was in June this year, perhaps if they can get an earlier date it might be in May next year.

I trained for that race, but with race day temps at 110 it seemed a bit much even for someone with their brain fried from training all summer in this heat… If the promoter (TucsonRacing) can get a early May date 'twould be a very nice race- although hilly.

Lake Un-Pleasant wasn’t THAT bad.

Just wondering, are you doing the 1/2 in Tempe? I’m seriously considering it. Worried that multiple laps will further damage my grey matter.

Not sure, I would prefer to go to Utah, especially because the last Tempe (oly) race was not well run - (ie swim course 50% too long), and I get dizzy spinning around and around the so called “Lake” - really expensive colorado river water that’s evaporating… anyway if schedule allows i will go up to red rocks- it’s pretty and should be nice and cool. The site says Temp is …“the only urban half iron race in the US” ---- I guess he (3disciplines) never wondered WHY no one else is putting on a race in the middle of a CITY. I will leave my rant at that… are you in Phoenix- Scottsdale area?

No, silly…I’m your friend from the mountains! (I AM assuming that this is the sp I know.)

Yeah, the International swim was ridiculous, but I’m figuring that because of it they will be extra careful with the course measurements for the 1/2.

The laps don’t sound real appealling either, but the Utah race is very small. I emailed the RD and there are less than 100 entrants so far. Course looks really good (right up my alley) but I’ve already done my lonely race (Lake Pleasant) for the season.

I am hoping the 1/2 in Tempe will be a tad more competitive. Although, everything depends on how toasted I am by then…it will have been a LONG season!

Ohhhh nowwww I know you (examining your name), yep its me…interesting point about Utah vs. Tempe- and a lot less $$ to get there too- although Red Rocks sounds very scenic etc. Maybe if they can get a few hundred people, sounds like a great race.

Met some guy riding the other day who knows you- didn’t get his name but he’s coming up this weekend for the tri in pines.

Maybe we’ll see you in nov.

The Utah 1/2 was almost a no go last year because of very low water levels. The RD last year said that he was going to reserve the right until the night before to cancelit and call it a duathlon. The proposed du was was going to be a total of 19 miles of running with 56 bike. Yuck!!! Check the water levels again this year, you all in the SW know we are in a pretty bad “Mega-drought” as the press puts it.

As for an Iron distance race in the SW (NM or AZ) there is not one, but there is a great 1/2 IM in Lubbock Texasm the Bufallo Springs 1/2 IM. It is usually at the end of June and is an IM qualifier. It is well attended, very very **very **well run and a lot of fun! This year the had over 650 volunteers (and the ones on the bike course knew how to hand up water bottles, the vols in Tempe in May couldn’t hand up a water bottle at all and Igot 3 tries at it). Plus they have free beer at the end. A few years back Mike Greer (the Buff Springs promoter) made a IM proposal to IMNA for a full IM race in Lubbock. uess who beat him out…Can you say Provo. Oh well. I hope he tries again.

Yuck
