When I got my first wetsuit, I headed for the pool as well.
Considering how little we wear in public, covered in neoprene is no cause for self consciousness unless you have the current issue of Fetish Monthly sticking out of your swim bag.
Anyway, the pool is likely to be too warm for a wetsuit and you will be really uncomfortable within minutes.
Alright, so taking the advice of half of you (and ignoring the advice of the other half), I went to the pool this afternoon, with my wetsuit. Besides the fact that it seems I need to lose 10-15 pounds to properly fit into it, it went pretty well. I didn’t overheat, the wetsuit fitted me adequately, and most of my laps were about 10-15% faster.
I did get some looks from people as I was getting in the water, but other than that if they thought I was a “strange denizen” they kept it to themselves. In fact, the gentleman who I ended up splitting a lane with struck up a nice conversation with me about my wetsuit.
I probably won’t do it again for a while, but all in all I think it was worth it
I tried my new wetsuit in the pool once… after about 2 laps I was so flippen hot I had to get out. I actually was approached by a guy who also did tri… he knew what was up. ha!
Lets see… spandex shorts, speedo shorts, cycling jerseys, wetsuits… when, as triathletes dont we look like strange people?
…not a big deal at all. I usually swim at least once or twice in the pool w/ wetsuit before my first open water tri of the season. I have seen others do it too and never blinked an eye. It helps to have a competition pool since those are a bit cooler than the typical Y.
