I’m thinking about upgrading my running watch to something that uses GPS. All I would really be interested in using it for is pacing.
My question is, are the GPS watches accurate enough for this purpose?
If so — recommendations? Would also need HR. THANKS!
Set the watch to record your pace at mile intervals. Then set a window to show that pace while you are running. Use that pace as a reference (if you want finer detail, you could go with 1/2 mile intervals).
DO NOT use instantaneous pace because it’s usually off.
I use a Garmin 310xt. It’s instant pace updates are generally right on. In 12 runs since I have gotten it it’s only been off once and that was only for about 400 yards.
I’ve been using a Garmin Forerunner 305 for a few years. Based on race times over measured courses, the pacing is surprisingly accurate – generally within a 0:01/mile.
SCOTTinNJ makes a good point about the instantaneous pace. It can be a bit jumpy, but using average pace over the last mile is smooth, allowing you to speed up or ease off to hold your goal pace. The audible pace alerts are good too (if you’re running alone).
Mine has the HRM. No complaints about it.
Data recording is nice too.

Second the recommendation for the 305. It is IMO a steal at the price its at right now. I use SportTracks with it and its an astonishing amount of training information.
I use it for pacing - on the 305 set one of the fields to Pace - Lap for your average pace over the lap. You can use the actual/instant for your +/- on goal pace.
