I wear orthotics in my cycling shoes. I’ve been using the dress shoe type which only have the heel to mid foot portion with no cushioning for the forefoot. It isn’t very comfortable. I also have the full shoe orthotic but it is a tight squeeze and because of the material the orthotic is made with it isn’t very breathable (fine for now but once summer hits it just won’t work). I recently purchased the LG Tri Carbon HRS show and one of the benefits of the shoe is the heat moldable sole. The sole goes up kind of high at the heel which is supposed to help with heel retention. I was thinking about taking an X-acto knife and cutting the sole that the shoe came with so that the orthotic would fit in it. That would give me a breathable front cushion for the shoe along with perhaps better heel retention. Has anyone tried something like this? Does it seem like it would work? Any advice?
I got fitted for eSoles. They were custom made to fit the cant of my shoes.
I also had them made for my running shoes.
My knees now like me.
How are eSoles different from orthotics? The website makes them look more breathable for sure. How much are they? The closest place to get scanned is quite a long drive for me. Is there a similar product?
There are many ways to get fitted for orthotics, plaster, laser, etc.
I drank the kool aid and drove 450 miles to a shop in Chicago just to get it done.
They are different because they do a 3D rendering of your foot which for me, gave me a better fit. I got the metatarsal pad and they hit it perfectly.
Disclaimer . . . I do not work in the industry and have no relationship with esoles or any other orthotics. I just like the esoles product.
I can’t walk a hundred feet without knee pain if I don’t have orthotics in my shoes, but I have never needed them in cycling shoes.
I need the orthotics in walking/running shoes to stop my heel from rolling in and putting lateral pressure on the knee joint, but with cycling shoes not much force is applied via the heel so I have never had a problem.
How much are they?
I got a discount through USA cycling . . .
I believe i got fitted and two customs esoles one for bike and one for running for around 400 USD.
My insurance covered my orthotics last year. Any chance eSoles would qualify?

Good question . . . some do and some don’t. My policy did not cover orthotics at all.
i use active imprint orthotics (the guy who started newton was the founder of this company first)in my running shoes and ones the podiatrist made in my everyday and cycling shoes (insurance paid for those). That said I think active imprints has ones that are designed to fit in cycling shoes too, it might be worth giving them a call to discuss, they were good to deal with.
