Use Flo rim tape (or cotton adhesive tape)?

Received my wheel from order 10, and noticed the rim tape was not pre-installed which means I can either try to install it (seems like a bitch to get it over the rim!) or use a selfadhesive cotton rim tape. What’s the experience with the Flo rim strip - good, or might as well use a cotton tape? All my other wheels have had cotton rim tape which has always worked very well - hence the question.

Thanks!

I always - ALWAYS - use velox tape. The rim strips, IME, are not as good with latex tubes. The edges are just sharp and hard.

Cotton rim strips are one of those “don’t mess with success” things. It’s just not worth it for a bit of weight.

Velox FTW!

One of those things I didn’t even think about switching to latex on my race wheels. Are there any other “doh” moments? I’m now up to latex with removable cores, velox rim tape, Bontrager TLR sealant.

Velox FTW!You answered my question perfectly - that’s exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks!

They stopped pre-installing it? For everything?

Neither. Veloplugs assuming they fit in the spoke holes.

I just received flo 30’s from this last order and they had rim tape pre-installed. I chose to use it, hope I don’t regret that as I know nothing about different tapes.

The rim tape on my disc was already installed. I put the others on my 90’s without any problem.

We race on HED Jets, similar to the Flo wheels in that they are aluminum rims with bonded carbon. We have settled on using Stan’s tubeless tape for our wheels. Two layers of the tape seems to work well. When we used the Velox tape, it was good, but seemed to bunch a little bit. That was even after a thorough cleaning of the rims to make sure there was no oil/grease/etc.

Given your two choices though, I would go with Velox unless you try the above.

I got a front 60 and it was not installed.

I’ve had good results with Stan’s rim tape on my FLO 60/90 set. Two layers. Works really well with latex tubes and it’s thinner which seems to make installing tires easier.

on wide rims, I have found velow can squirm. better to go with two layers of Tom A’s strapping tape for latex

Squirming is not an issue if you use the appropriate width of Velox. For the HED C2 wheels and most other wide wheels the 22mm (MTB) Velox is a perfect fit between the hooks and doesn’t move. The 16mm ‘normal’ stuff will cause you problems.

Tom A’s strapping tape???

I was thinking of ordering some 19mm velox for my FLO’s…? 22mm seems like it would make it tougher to get tires on…

I think “Tom A’s strapping tape” is referring to Stan’s Rim Tape:

.

not so much, had wide velox rim tape on a wide wheel and it squirmed all over the place. might have been a bad batch but it did not adhere well.

I don’t think he is referring to stans stuff specifically, I thought he was referring to the ribbed type packing tape(fibers run parallel to tape) would not be first time I was wrong if this is not what he was referring to once upon a time.

Ahhh…I’ve used that stuff before.

After a few months of hot weather, it was a sticky, gooey mess trying to remove. never again. Maybe Tom has a “secret” brand?

I’ll stick with Stan’s for now.
