USAT Nats. Canceled

Just heard it was canceled completely…wow!

That is AWFUL, all of my friends drove there from Colorado.

Why wouldn’t they postpone it until tomorrow?

or later in the day?

No permits are only good for the day of the race. Also, volunteers, fire and police, med tent volunteers, etc. No way you could get that all together in one day. Plus many probably have plane tickets for tonight or tomorrow morning. I feel really bad for all those stuck in the bad situation.

Forgot about the permits…at least some could have raced if the postponed it to later in the day.

Permits are only good for a certain time span, not all day unless all day is payed for. It also depends on how long USAT rented the location of the race for.

I am in KC right now…yes, cancelled. While we are not mad at the RD (why?) or anyone else. Completely cancelling the race was not an easy decision and not sure the right one.

THey should have posponed it until later today. Now, in the Hotel it is still crappy out, but NO major rain and no lightening. We had a TON of lightening/thunder and rain so hard you couldn’t see ---- so I understand that they were gun shy. I think that the Permit today was only good until early afternoon (1 ish?) so rumor has it that may have been the trigger.

The USAT folks and everyone else here is trying to figure out what to do about Honolulu now — what a mess! Honestly, we are just all upset/sad - tons of money, time, travel, tapering…well…you know.

It’s really saddening what’s happening to you all there right now. And I’m feeling very guilty about the whole situation. I feel like a person who got bumped off a plane, only later to find out that it crashed. In one sense I’m glad that I did not go, but on the other very sad for all those that did… And you should blame someone, the braintrust at USAT that picked this location… If you read through all the posts on this subject, and Dans article written some time back, you would see there were alternatives long ago that would have avoided this situation…

And you should blame someone, the braintrust at USAT that picked this location…

Shame on them for not being able to predict the weather. And to think that they would have nationals in a central location.

Did they really PICK that location? I thought it was more of a case where Rochester backed out and Mark in Kansas City stepped in and offered to hold the race on short notice. It’s a bad situation for sure, but I don’t believe anyone really PICKED KC. In the end, it became the only option.

Damn, that really sucks. I had several friends out there. Good thing I’m not very fast!

The big question, though, is clearly the Hawaii question. Anybody have any info on that?

The real injustice is that KC hasn’t seen hardly any (if any) rain in the last month. This isn’t Florida where thunderstorms are a daily occurrence. Right now the area is having a severe drought. Any other day…

USAT is supposedly having a committee meeting on how to pick the World Team right now. I expect they will announce something by the “awards” scheduled at 2:30pm (CT). Not any easy task, no matter what they do, someone will be unhappy.

“And you should blame someone, the braintrust at USAT that picked this location”

Huh???

Yeah. . . that whole weather thing should be predictable. . I mean with wireless web, cell phones and nuclear power and we still cannot forsee the future. .

What if it would have been last weekend? Sunny, mid 70s in the AM. . .perfect weather. They should also be blamed for picking the date. … stupid USAT braintrust (I am being sarcastic).

There was at least one and, possibly, more bids.

I assume you mean at least one OTHER bid. And “possibly”? Or possibly not. I don’t know.

Anyway, without knowing where the other bids where it is impossible to speculate whether it would have been a better location. I can think of lots of places worse than KC in August.

I came very close to doing it, which would’ve been a drive from Ontario. Whew!! This is similar to what happened at the Canadian Age Group Championships last August in B.C. – except they cancelled the a.g. races in the morning and went ahead with the elites later in the day! (I think that’s how the day proceeded.)

I know there was one more bid but I also know you probably would not have liked the location.

at the 7 am start time the weather was severe. they postponed. at 7.40 they canceled the swim and were to have a time trial bike start. the rain came harder. at 8 they said would be a 9 am start. at 8.30 the rain started to lighten up. at 8.45 the “jury” decided to cancel. at 9.30 the rain was light. i cant believe the only had two hour window to decide if the natl championships could come off. it is now noon and no rain for last 2 hours. they told us they had permits for the day…all day.

I also was out for the race. I’m still in shock. I’ve been in the sport since 1983 and never seen an entire race cancelled. The bands f rain came one right after another. It’s 1:00 pm and the sun is trying to peek out, but looks like it could rain again at any moment.

I have no idea about Team USA situation. I just missed in Shreveport last year, and was wanting another crack this year. If they went back to the Shreveport results I’d make the team, but I know that would be unfair to those who skipped Shreveport and waited to try this year. So not sure what will be fairest way.
