USAT Nationals update::BUST

I’m not going to say I told you so, and if I did believe in Bush’s evil god, then I would say that he has sent his message to USAT about their Nationals choices. I just got a call from a birdie there, and the swim is cancelled. It is pouring rain, lightening and thunder everywhere, and everyone is trapped either in there cars( if they are lucky) or under some make shift shelter. They are now handing out trash bags to the soaked people, many have already turned in their chips and gone home. Their plan is to have a time trial start at 9 am this morning, beginning with the bike, and followed by the run. It’s a race directors worst nightmare going on there right now, and for USAT, I guess we will be picking a bike/run squad for the worlds this year. I feel bad for the racers there, it must be hell…

Anyone there or around Kansas city have more weather info???

I was going to fly out from CA for the race. I am so glad I am not there; I would have been so pissed without a swim. I am doing Chicago in two weeks, hopefully the weather will be better there.

USAT’s Track Record on OD Races:

NY Pro Nationals: Swim canceled a few years ago b/c of water quality.

AG Nationals Idaho- Tacks in the road

AG Qualifier NY- 40 degrees out

AG nationals last year- Hurricane of all hurricanes put a big damper on the days leading up to the race.

Oh well, I don’t feel so bad about not being there anymore. I was all ready to go and canceled my plane ticket 24 hours out. Bad asthma/allergy week. I’m a swimmer/runner specialist so no swim would be bad news in my case.

Hey Monty, Russ Jones is out there. This might actually be good for him. I’ve been working with him on his swim the past few weeks, preparing for the non-wetsuit swim, there. But, he’s still not too good. You know how fast he is on the bike and run, he might be having a field day, a wet one, though!

Latest post is that the race is cancelled, so Russ is bound to be having a horrible weekend, along with the 1000+ others who spent their time and money to go to beautiful Kansas City.

I am in Kansas City and most of the rain and thunderstorms was happening right over where the Championships was going to take place. We haven’t had rain for like 3 weeks. . . it has been 95 and sunny everyday for the past 3 weeks and then last night the thunderstorms rolled in and haven’t left. . . I was driving up that way to go on a group ride and it was pouring a ton. I still was able to go on a ride though, but it was farther south than where the race was being held. …

THat is just KC in August (or summer for that matter), any moment the thunderstorms can roll in.

Just his luck, I suppose. You may have read his writeup in Competitor Mag a few months back - member of Olympic Marathon team slated to go to Moscow. Training to make the following Olympics, hit by a car. Six knee surgeries - can’t do the distance. Picks up biathlon (now duathlon) and now tri’s.

For the past year, he knew that aging up to 50, this year, would be his best bet for a national title and a great showing at World’s. I feel for him, hope his knees hold out another year.

Thanks for the weather update,. So our choice was 95 degrees and humid, or thunderstorms and lightening… At least there won’t be any heat stroke victims today…

At 7:00/8:00 in the morning it isn’t bad at all for heat and humidity. Even on days when it is going to 100 with heat index of 105/110 at 7:00/8:00 in the morning it is usually 72-76 and plesant (no wind, lower humidity, etc). It really starts getting hot around 2:00 to 3:00. . .so IM or 1/2 IM would be a different story.

If you talk to him, tell him to stay in shape and not be discouraged. They still have to pick a world team somehow, and fast. A lot of people will just say screw it, but Russ should suck it up, go wherever they send everyone, and go to Hawaii and have a great time…You’re only 50 once…

exactly. play the NBAPA card and do the race in Vegas as it is ‘cenrtally located’ =o)

Are you blaming the USAT for the following…

AG Nationals Idaho- Tacks in the road
AG Qualifier NY- 40 degrees out
AG nationals last year- Hurricane of all hurricanes put a big damper on the days leading up to the race.
