well, yes to many of your questions. i’ve been doing nationals and worlds for a goodly amount of years. is it worth it is a question which relates to your personal goals.
i think they’re lots of fun because of the social aspect. worlds has given me all sorts of friends from around the globe, and competing for the usa is a good deal different from all other races where we race only for ourselves.
nationals vary every two years (pattern for the past x years), and worlds vary every year. the pattern of days and events is pretty much the same, but the site and organizers make them different. nationals is a shorter affair, as well…worlds is just shy of a week’s length.
as aforementioned, i really like both races and most of that enjoyment comes from the social end of things. in terms of competiton, of course, this is the top of the top.

I signed up last week for AG Nationals in Portland for '07. It will be my first time and I would like to go to Worlds and will if I qualify (which doesn’t look too hard, top 16 in each AG).
2006 Nationals in Kansas City was well organized. It was not crowded and from what I saw and heard from officials (there were several on motorcycles) drafting was not a problem and people were respectful of the rules. It probably helps that the experience level of athletes at Nationals is on average higher, so they are less likely to simply not know the rules.
We’ll be at 2007 Nationals in Oregon. The course is a good one and discourages drafting due to the rollers and climbs.
