Not sure exactly. I believe the earliest confirmed case now is from the 1950s and genetic comparison of the chimpanzee SIV virus from which the primary strain of human HIV evolved indicates that they diverged sometime back around the turn of the 20th century. I have no idea when we could isolate viruses but I’m thinking it was well after the turn of the 20th century. Who would have known SIV would cause AIDS anyway, in chimps it doesn’t cause AIDS as far as I’m aware.
