Upstate SC Tri Training Groups?

Are there any Triathlon training groups or individuals in the Greenville/Spartanburg areas of South Carolina? My search has not turned up groups, so thought I’d throw out a line. A little peer pressure may be what I need to better some times this season. Any information would be helpful.

Thanks

You should contact either Carolina Triathlon or Go Tri Sports (both in G’ville) for information about local triathlon training groups/clubs. There’s a HUGE triathlon scene in the Upstate.

Regular Slowtwitch posters Applenutt, xtremerun and ericnsc are all in or near Greenville.

I ride on Saturday mornings with a fairly large but casual group down in Anderson. It’s a mix of roadies and triathletes. If you do any of the SetUp events in the area, then you’ll likely see people you know at our ride. We leave from New Spring Church on Hwy. 81 at 9:00 sharp. Of course, it may be a light turnout this weekend since the forecast temp at 9 am is about 15 degrees. Some folks will likely be there anyway. The turnout was about 20 to 25 last weekend with people going various paces and distances. You can check it out at www.andersoncyclist.blogspot.com.

We actually began a small tri club in Easley a couple of years ago. We were up to 15-20 members at one point before we let things fall apart - we’re talking now about getting it reorganized and going again. There are still a small group of us (5-8 guys) now that do a lot of training together. I can also let you know about some other local rides and runs that you may be interested in if that better suits you. If you want some more info, feel free to email me or drop me a line on here.

As mentioned there are alot of triathletes in the upstate. Near Spartanburg is tne Middle tyger YMCA, Peter Kotland has a swim program and does cycling classes. We have a group currently training for the Myrtle Beach Marathon, we usually meet at Furman University on Saturday mornings at 8:00am and run between 12 and 20. We also usually ride the watershed area of Northern Greenville county into NC on Sundays as weather permits. This pretty much continues thru IM Florida in November.Go Tri Sports has spin classes in their shop (bring your own trainer) and also runs at lunch some days if you are in downtown Greenville. Carolina Tri has organized rides usually on Tues and Saturday also I think. They both have contact info on the web. The downtown YMCA in Greenville also has a pretty good masters program as does the Greenville County Rec Center on the westside. Lots of options and some of the best cycling in the country. Good luck.

right now the Upstate Winter Bike League leaves from Carolina Tri in downtown G’ville at 10:00 on Saturdays. Well over 100 riders show up. It’s a great group ride with attack zone sprints.

Thanks for all the info. I’m in the Spartanburg area and plan to look into these options. I’ll see you in the water or on the road.
