Upper Weight Limit for Wheelset?

Hello all, my uncle has me a bit excited about ebikes, you know, electric powered. Most of those bikes have top speeds in the 20mph range due to legality issues. What’s the point though when you can pedal those speeds without assistance is what I thought. Well, if I could pull 30mph with the assistance I’d go for it, but I’m not seeing anything available so we are considering building our own since he has experience in the field. We are trying to make this thing ultra clean, which the current ebikes generally are not, at all!

OK, so on to the question…is there an upper weight limit for wheelsets due to handling issues? I’d be stoked if I could use a disk rear wheel that had a custom designed gel battery that fit within the confines of the disc. Of course, this back wheel, or you might call it a flywheel now, would weigh at least 5 kilos, maybe even up 7-8 kilos. The front wheel would contain a motorized hub, by Heinzman (sp?), that is capable of speeds up to 37mph (low torque/high speed), or so they claim. Of course it wouldn’t be street legal, but if it looks like a standard road bike I can’t see getting pulled over by a cop. It would be great for pacing people without having to use a motorbike too. Anyway, what do you think, will I run into serious problems with heavy wheels?

Anybody here have experience with ebike designs that would like to point me in some type of direction? I plan on being president once the revolution takes place and I promise we’ll have a dedicated bike lane corridor on all freeways, so this ebike thing is bound to take off. Helping me out is only helping yourself.

I know there are some braniacs among us that could theorize on this issue if nobody has actually ridden with a flywheel like front or rear wheel. Please help, it could save me a lot of time from having a 20lb wheel constructed only to find it’s useless, though I imagine it would have some type of useful training application even if it’s not ebike related.

Paint and Body are more important than perfomance. Make it look fast, it’ll fly off the shelves. If it looks like a cow, it’s going to sell like a cow. (So are you gonna buy the cow?)

Can I be vice-president of public minority failure operations?

I’m sure you could run some formulas, get moment of inertia and fun stuff like that. I could probably software model it but that would be a pain. If it were me, I’d get a road bike, cut some aluminum plate to strap to the rear wheel and build a BALANCED (very important with all that weight) 7-8kilo rear wheel (damn that’s heavy) and then test ride it. Make sure you have enough traction on that front tire. If you set it up like a cruiser for comfort the weight distribution might be farther back than optimal and you’d find yourself just peeling out all the time. Sounds like a cool idea, good luck.
