I am planning on striping all the parts off my 96 Ultimate and replacing them with lighter parts. The only thing is…I am an idiot when it comes to these things. I know (I think) that I need a 1 inch headset. What is my BB size? I am planning on DA 10 speed (sorry record). I have some parts.
Of course I am on a limited budget.
I am looking at Easton (90) fork, stem, and handlebars.
Any other things I need to know? Any reccomendations?
English thread BB. 27.2 mm seatpost. I believe that a braze-on front derailleur is necessary.
What do you have on there now, and does it all work properly? Bear in mind that “lighter” and “budget” are mutually exclusive. Light, strong, inexpensive. Pick 2.
If you already have decent components on the frame now, the weight you save will be miniscule by going with DA10. I would pick and choose carefully, and upgrade components as they wear out. Check out Weight Weenies (weightweenies.starbike.com), they have a pretty good database of component weights.
I currently have a DA8 drivetrain. I have been told that the weight savings will come with replacing the fork, handlebars, and headset. The parts on there were light in 96 standards but technology has improved especially with carbon. I hope to shave weight with the seatpost also. I am going to look at the Thompson Masterpeice because of the other thread. I already upgraded my wheels a few years ago and will stick with the ones I have.
Easton forks are fine, but I really like my Reynolds. As far as bars and stem go, I have been very satisfied with my Syntace kit - not the most expensive, not carbon, but very light and very comfortable. Racelite bar, F99 stem.
I am sorry that I did not spend the morning on Slowtwitch, I was in a meeting.
As for your question, that 96 Ultimate has a 1" steerer, a 27.2 seatpost and a 68mm English bb shell, and yes the front derailleur is a braze-on.
Cheers,
