Upgrading from Ultegra-9 ?'s

If I want to upgrade from ultegra 9 to 10-spd - either Ultegra10 or DA10, what components of my existing setup can I keep? I want to change out the cranks anyway.

I need a different cassette. I live in relatively flat area; what would you recommend?

Do I need a new front and rear derailleur?

Do I need to switch cables and shifters/brake levers?

What’s the best place to get this all from?

You only need shifters, possibly chain, and cassette.

The 10spd will shift best with a properly sized chain.

Chris

you would also need the rear derailleur as well, correct?

no 9 spd rear der. will work since the indexing is in the shifters.

are you saying I do or don’t need a new RD?

don’t
.

I did it this weekend. Very simple.

  1. Get new shifters (10 speed) - $250 on ebay
  2. Get a new cassette - $15 on ebay
  3. Put on a new chain (10 speed, which is minimally narrower, but makes the drive chain virtually silent). $20 on ebay

New cables may not be needed, but might if the shifter is a new model year. I found that a 2004 9 speed shifter being replaced by a 2006 10 speed shifter needed a longer cable by about 1 inch. The cables come with the shifters if you buy them new or off ebay so no worry there. Just measure them out. New cables aren’t necessary a bad thing either.

The entire process took me about 2 hours while watching a football game and chasing down my 18 month old who kept stealing my tools. Good luck.

I agree with everyone that it is a simple process with no new derailers needed, but why do you feel the need? I seriously doubt that there has ever been a race won or lost because of using 9 or 10 speed.

I’m considering the same thing…my thinking is that I want my road and tri bikes to both be 10 speed so I can swap wheels back and forth without having to deal with the cassette. I’ve got nice tubulars on my road bike that I don’t want to use on rollers over the winter.
