Update on the Funky Monkey

Hi Gang… I finished painting my frame, and attempted to apply the decals. The painting looks kind of mediocre. The colour is really cool, but it’s blotchy and uneven. If I had a few hundred bucks, I’d strip it again, and send it out to be done professionally. Not doing that again!

The decals were a nightmare. The stuff you use to waterproof the ink dissolved the black ink, so I applied it with a model airbrush, which worked fairly well. When I tried to apply them, they curled up badly, and really didn’t stick at all. I tore one when it stuck to the decal application cloth. Long story short, that’s $30 I’ll never get back!

I’m looking to get vinyl decals made up and I’ll do my best to cover up the botched areas. I had two paint spatters, and one chip when i was peeling off the remainder of a decal with an xacto knife.

I’ll keep you updated, and send a few pics when the whole thing is done. I think the only thing that will make this process worthwile is that it’s going to be very very special to my girl! I would NEVER do this for myself.

Nick

hey this post slipped past me. Sorry to hear the decals didn’t work out. If you ever figure out the decals, I’m still interested. Those original Cervelo one stickers are pretty ugly…

Tai can probably do up some decals for you… he’s done a bunch for other ST’ers and I believe they turned out quite well.

I emailed Tai, and he suggested having a local shop do automotive decals. I did that, and the results are quite good. I am building up the frame today, and I will post pics tonight. The cost for the automotive decals was $40. Should have done that the first time around!!

Unfortunately, already a few paint chips… I think next time I would have the frame powder coated. I’ll do a final post with what I would have done were I to do it again.

Cheers,

Nick
