Funny how your club expected an ex-pro to comment on subjects better covered by mechanics and engineers.
Well, I forgot to mention that the guest speaker is now manging the local bike shop that sponsored our club for 2008 and has started an initiative to carry tri gear for us.
I’d love any serious study about wheels (I know it’s a never ending argument),and a link to that site that references tire traction, pressures etc. I believe the latter report was posted on ST from France.
No surprise. Like a pro has any idea about such stuff.
Ever talked to a pro bike racer about gear? Yeesh, with rare exception, they know less than nothing (yeah, I know … generalizing a bit, but not much).
Thanks…perfect

Thanks for calling me out, rather than take the opposite side of the argument if you had a problem. You missed the point, totally.
I would suspect a lot of pros are likely fairly clueless about technical matters. Some pros probably just do what their coaches tell them to do, including bike fitting. Isn’t that what they hire them for? Just being a pro triathlete doesn’t make anybody an expert on technical matters pertaining to the sport.
I don’t think he was stating how much smarter he was, he was just shocked at the lack of knowledge by this supposed pro athlete when it came to gear… I wasn’t there for this nor do I know who this guy is but most Pro Triathlete’s now a days know A LOT about gear and bike tech, if you need examples just read some interviews by Bjorn, Torbjorn, Normann and Faris, etc.
I think when I go to St Anthony’s Im gonna walk around and ask some of the pro’s if they know the differences in a 650 and 700, and what effects might having your tire pressure at 110 or 120 might have on their race outcome. I bet you they hardly know the difference unless they somehow rode both sizes and the tire pressure well maybe thats what he was told by his coaches and he just never learned properly lol… Mtn Bike tires though Idk if I believe that one…
Dude he isn’t calling him out hes just telling us what he saw, cut him some slack!!
ok back to studying STATS 2, oh and its KNEW not NEW lol sorry had to have a little fun!
Thanks Flaco for explaining the obvious, but Swimfan is back!
Alright, perhaps I came off a bit brash. Sometimes its possible to read something one way online then to realize nobody else took it the same way.
I agree that it is too bad a pro triathlete was attempting to field questions which were clearly out of his area of expertise; however, I applaud him for being there and attempting to aid other people in the sport.
If I could ask anything though, it would be simply not to write the guy off when you weren’t there for the whole presentation. Many people have a difficult enough time simply getting up to speak, maybe you could just change the title of the thread and the first post a bit, so you don’t come across as slamming the guy who was just trying to help a local tri club…
I don’t think I would have talked about traction when talking about tire pressure. I know the first thing I would have thought of would have been rolling resistance and the aerodynamics of the tire rim interface; that is why I don’t talk to tri-clubs though. I get way too caught up in the minute details.
Apology accepted. The reason I am appalled is that the guy is now manager of the local bike shop, therefore he is the de facto expert on triathlon for our club. This same guy told my riding partner that she would be much faster on her new Cannondale 700c road bike with clip ons, than her Cervelo tri bike (650c)that is perfectly fitted to her. The last thing our club needs is a sponsor that misinforms our growing membership. Please note also, I did not post the guy’s name, or our club.

oh…to answer your question…
zipp tangente 21 mm. i had mpr2 23 mm, but they were way too wide, and they were yellow. with that said, i got the zipp tires for $30. i don’t think i would pay what h2ofun paid for them…
, but Swimfan is back!
