Ultrarunning Question

I’m doing the Bull Run Run 50 Miler on April 9. I’m doing the Hat 50k on March 19th as training for the BRR. Should Hat be my last long run before the BRR? Let me give you some background info.

I’ve been doing 60-70 miles a week. I just capped this past week off by doing a 12 mile run on Saturday and run/walking the B&A Trail Marathon on Sunday. I feel fine today.

I’ve been trying to do about 40 miles on the weekends. When should I stop? Should I do one the week after Hat? Or… is that too soon after to be doing that mileage? But, I don’t think I should do it the week before BRR.

Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

I would not think that you would want to try to recover from a 50k, squeeze in another long run, and try to be recovered again for the 50 miler.

There would be too many risks re: injury, overtraining, and lowered immune system vs. any potential benefits. You’ve done the necessary work already. What could you possibly gain from one more long run… a few minutes off your time, at most, versuses the possiblility of being fried for Bull Run.

I have heard some quality coaches say that it’s better to be 20% undertrained as opposed to 5% overtrained. I don’t think you are undertrained at all, but why risk the overtraining?

Just go and enjoy the 50k and then focus on going into Bull Run rested and strong.

thanks for the good words. overtraining is a definite problem and i want to avoid that at all costs. it sounds like sound advice. you’ve got quite a few good points in there - no point in ruining what i’ve accomplished so far.

relax, thanks for the website. i’ll definitely check it out.
