UltraMax events: Interesting

Could the UltraMax guys be giving WTC a run for their money? I have heard a lot of good things about this race organization and they are doing a nice job of putting together their '04 calendar. I just got (and you probably did too) a nice e-mail from them with a ton of interesting information about the half-Ironman distance U.S. National Championships. Interesting.

Anybody have experiences with these events? Thoughts? They have my interest now.

Mark puts on fabulous races!! I did the first two Ultramax full races (well, part of them) and they were great–the volunteers, all the details, everything. I was thinking of not going back again in 2004 just for a break, but now…even closer to Mom and Dad. I am very tempted.

I did the 1/2 Max last June as well as the Race for Sight Sprint. From what I could see they were both first class events. The 1/2 was especially fun even though the run course turned me into a bumbling idiot. The energy was amazing. They had someone on a PA system the whole time anouncing names, where they were from, and even made jokes at some of our expense. Not sure if it was the RD or not. Nonetheless it was a blast and I’m going to try and be one of the 250 at the September 1/2.

Another thing worth mentioning is I’m pretty sure all proceeds are going to charity. I dont pretend to know much about it, but I’m happy to support any race that has a greater purpose. I’m amazed they made this race a Championship. These people must be doing something right.

I did the inaugural 1/2Max last year. I think the winner came in right at 4:30. Toughest 1/2 marathon I’ve ever been involved in. It’d be in the epic range if the heat and humidity show up.

I think the announcer they use is Jerry ???, big name in the upper Midwest (MN, etc.) He was at the full UM too and is great. A Midwestern Steve King.

CATS Half (Degray Lake) has a half-marathon course that’s pretty damn tough, along with the heat and humidity. Great all-around course, especially the bike. If you want to qualify for the champs. this would be the race to do.

Isn’t the CATS race the USAT Long course Nationals? How does this work with the new Championship race?

Also, can you give more info about the CATS course? What makes it so tough? I just sent in my registration and will take all the details I can get!

I agree with Miller. Lake Degray is a chain of pristine lakes—clear water. Kind of eerie but you forget about it right away. The bike is hilly with little or no wind. Very scenic through timberland. Roads vary from gravel to smooth asphalt. The run course is the kicker, though. They changed it back in 2002 to become a 2-loop affair. 1st half mile or so up-hill, again with no wind. I did it in 2001 and this last year 2003—both times sunny, hot, and humid. Maybe this year it’ll rain???

Announcer for the 1/2 was Brad Rex, I think he lives out west these days. Brad has been doing a lot of races in recent years, former GFT winner.
