Ultramax 1/2 IM Bike course? and Disc or no Disc?

Contemplating a Renn purchase.

“A” races this summer are Ultramax 1/2 and Atomic Man 1/2 in SEP.

Anyone done Ultramax 1/2 before? What’s the bike course like? I’m hearing run course is actually more hilly that bike course?

Would Disc be beneficial or a hindrance on that course?

thanks in advance for any info

Jim

Did ultramax 1/2 2003 and you heard right run very hilly ess only flat was the one step before you go up or down. A disc would do well but I understand they have changed it some but I would still use a disc. No killer hills on the bike. But I would do some hill repeats to prepare for the run. Great race well run and great prizes for 1st(full wetsuit) and 2nd(sleevless QR bike jersey) in every age group. At the swim finish there was a approx 150yd up hill run to t1 but I understand they have changed that also.

Good Luck Great Race mike

There is no doubt that the disc is faster. Run a really light Zipp 909,Corima or one of the Hed all carbon discs that will be out by then. You will always save time and be stable with the disc for the winds in the wonderful Midwest are not typically killers. The hills are tough though so a riding a set of wheels that are aero and light will truly benefit you.I have worked with hundreds of athletes who have done this race and a number of them did well with full aero wheels. An excellent wheelset that I’d recommend would be the 909 Zipp’s with the Vittoria Evo Corsa KX tubulars. These tires are tough and light!!!

The bike route works great with a disk. Flat to rolling. At the very end there is one big hill. It’s just before you reenter innsbrook. I just tell you this so you’ll know to hold a little back. As you are finishing the bike you are going down hill and can get going very fast . There is a speed bump on this stretch. I saw some people leave the ground and fly-----I could tell it scared them.
