Okay boys and girls, I'm back to bug you all about all things Ultra in 2008.First of all let me all wish you a Happy New Year with the hipe that you resolutions haven't already fallen by the wayside.Secondly let me invite all of you to put all good sense to one side and consider signing up for Ultraman Canada this year.So far there are 11 entrants(I will enter soon enough)which leaves about 13 left before the cut-off(not including teams).Get yourselves organised so we can match you with local crews and do all we can to make your UMC experience a truly special one.If UMC isn't your bag then join me in Quebec for the 2008 World Double Iron Champs in early July.Great race, great people, great venue.Love me of not,I hope to see you all out there in 2008.
I am looking @ UMC in 2010… So I need to be patient!
Glad to see you are back!
Cheers,
Fred.
Other than the challenge, Ultraman gives you the opportunity to experience a lot of the things that the founders of Ironman experienced. The early years of Ironman saw “teams” compete; an athlete and their crew. (I can remember watching Dave Scott being refueled by his parents in their stationwagon). Add to that the family atmosphere where everyone involved is there supporting each other to succeed and you have a great mix. As Ultra-Tri-Guy said: “great race, great people, great venue”
Thanks for the welcome back Fred.I’ll be in your neighbourhood on my way to Penticton after the Quebec Double Iron Worlds in July.I’d be more than happy to spend a day or two trying to convince the Ottawa St’ers to consider Ultraman or any of the Ultra’s in North America for that matter.I’m glad you are interested, you won’t be disappointed.
Hi Nick, I’ll be signinng up for the World Double Champs in Levis and hopefully Ultraman Canada next year… It will be nice meeting you!
Let us know when you are in O Town (and if you need a place to stay) and I am sure some oft Ottawa St’ers could come up with some long ultra training event smackdown ![]()
Fred.
As I said to a bunch of Ottawa friends…let me get through Ironman Lake Placid first and then I can decide if I want to try UMC or if I stick to my tried and true half Ironman races close to home in Sep. Let us know when you pass through, however, there will be no crazy long distance stuff as we will be tapering for Ironman LP.
Writing the Jonas Colting Ultraman interview certainly revved me up about UMH and UMC…UMC is a much more feasible event, from a timing, training, financial and work impact perspective…the main problem is never having run further than 42.2K in my life…but I guess that is part of the challenge.
Dev
Hey Dev,
I did my one and only (SoFar!) UMC with the same training and background as you. Had never run longer than 4hrs, had never swum longer than an hr at a time, I had ridden longer distances, but only a handful of times.
I did UMC as an EPIC camp for (what was at the time) the next month’s IMC. I did a half-Iron the week before, did a ride here in Washington (RAMROD, 156mi, 10,000 ft of climbing) on the thursday, the week of UMC. Got in My car on Friday nite, Got in Penticton at 2am, Started the swim at 7. It was one of the coolest things I have ever done. Nick was a member of my support crew, and he made it great. Did IMC 4 weeks later and did my best time in 6 years.
Don’t let the run scare you. You’ve got a ton of experience and understand the benefits of volume and frequency. I’ve been very successful at two double IMs after never having ran farther than 29 miles or so. Bike volume is so important. Your mind is your friend!
Hey Dev,my first trip through Ottawa will be in June on my way to Quebec from Chicago.Chip has given me a spot in his Rockman Tri to help promote my Athletes in Kind cause.I will have four weeks to get from Rockman to Levis so you can smack me down all you like,I'm used to it.As for Tom P's advice on doing Ultraman on Ironman training he is dead right as I managed to get through it without too much trouble. With your background it would be a no-brainer.I'll post the story of my first Ultraman (all those years ago) on my blog in after I finish work tonight. If a lazy, drunken fool like me can do it, anything is possible.
