This isn’t the first time this has happened by the way. I don’t remember his name, but there’s an influential Muslim leader from France (the DOUBLE whammy!!) who was supposed to speak at Notre Dame earlier this year, and we didn’t let him in either.
That was the beginning of purging the nation of washed up pop singers. Entirely different.
I looked up the French guy who was barred entry, btw- Tariq Ramadan. He was supposed to teach at Notre Dame in the fall of 2004, but was denied entry under some provision of the Patriot Act. (The guvmint wouldn’t say which provision applied. Imagine that.)
Barring these kinds of people is not much different from cutting off cellular service in the Holland Tunnel, imo. Serves absolutely no purpose, and is most likely counterproductive. We moan and whine all the time about how the moderate Muslims, “if there are any,” should be more vocal, and we jabber on and on about how important it is that we gain a better understanding of the Muslim world, and yet, when we have the chance to listen to a distinguished moderate Muslim scholar, we slam the door on him. Brilliant.
