My daughter needs to make a university decision very soon. She is accepted at UCLA and Berkeley. Triathlon is part of the mix in her decision making. Is there anybody out there with any firsthand knowledge about the tri clubs at Berkeley and UCLA?
I’ve bumped into a few of the CAL guys on the roads around here. Seems like a good group. I think Berkeley is a no brainer but I’m a Northern California native and couldn’t be forced into the Los Angeles area. Berkeley ranks a bit higher consistently as well, although they are both great schools.
The following is a link to the CAL triathlon website:
I have to be a bit partial to UCLA but both schools are very good.
The ucla tri club site is: http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/triathlon/
I think they are starting a more comprehensive team program, you may want to check the site for sure.
Any questions about the school, feel free to PM me.
Hope this helps,
Gregory
Send her to Cal.
If she goes there she’ll get a much better education, a better job, a bigger paycheck and ultimately she’ll be able to buy herself a much better bike.
Its a no brainer.
Howdy,
My name is Marcus and I’m the president of the UCLA Triathlon Team. Our team is only 2 years old, but we are on the fast-track to building one of the top triathlon programs on the West Coast. We have a coach who deals with beginners on upto advising several of the top triathletes in the entire world. You can find out more information on coach Gareth Thomas here: http://www.coachgareth.com. We are also aiming to have a fully financially supported elite team within a year or two (races, travel, equipment, etc. all paid for). UCLA has the top combined sports program in the United States. The facilities and resources we have here are second to none. You should feel free to stop by UCLA and talk to me or Gareth, participate in one of our workouts, or come to a team meeting. Most of the information about our team can be found on our website: http://www.triathlon.ucla.edu. You can also e-mail the team at triteam@ucla.edu.
Cheers,
Marcus George
President, UCLA Triathlon
Hey Marcus,
Is this why you haven’t been showing up at any of the collegiate bike races?

By the way STANFORD has the best combined collegiate sports program in the country if not the world for at least the last 10 years. Please see:
Stanford has won the NACDA Director’s Cup (formerly known as the Sears Cup) every year for the past ten years (the award has been offered the past eleven years), honoring the first-ranked collegiate athletic program in the United States.

Cal
.
I think she should decide based on the finishing postion of Cal vs. UCLA’s tri club president at collegiate nationals this past Saturday:
40 MICHAEL PERLBERG UC BERKELEY 20:51 1:20 1:05:40 0:45 40:23 2:08:57
41 MARCUS GEORGE UCLA 23:16 1:17 1:05:56 0:48 37:44 2:09:00
JK, i just met Marcus this weekend and it looks like he is one of the few people who did not crumble ont he run. It’s supposed to be my strength but you couldn’t have known that Saturday.
Regardless of her decision, it’s great to know that she was accepted to both UCLA and Cal. Too bad, however, she wasn’t up to USC’s standards.
University of South Carolina?
Are you guys forgetting about the east coast??? Send her to Penn State, I know there is a triathlon club but not sure how good is it. GO STATE!!
Brian: My cycling is not up to par this year because I got hit by an SUV (October) and had a level 3 ankle sprain (December). I haven’t been able to train consistently at all this year. Plus, this year I’m focusing on building our triathlon team…and studying for the phd entrance exam.
TheRascal: UCLA has more NCAA championships than any other school: http://uclabruins.collegesports.com/trads/no-1-combined-program.html. Plus, in terms of quality education for your buck ($$$), UCLA beats Standford any day.
MICHAEL: 3 seconds? Sweet!
I can say without a doubt that if you are a collegiate triathlete, the west coast is the place to be. Most of the large schools have a team and most have great programs. It is undisputed, however, that SoCal weather is in a leage of its own!

I work as an Academic Advisor at a University. I think her decision to attend either UCLA or CAL should be base on her major. Both seem to have good tri clubs, which would be “icing on the cake” for which ever she decides.
What is it that she wants to study?
