President Obama visited our prime minister in Ottawa today for his first official out of country visit. Lots of fanfare as many spectators braved the Canadian winter to catch a glimpse. He’s a very popular guy up here. Polls indicated that in the last elections Canadians would have voted 80% for him if we were a 51st state.
George W Bush has also chose Canada for his very first post presidential public speaking appearance. He’ll be speaking to a group of Alberta conservatives in Calgary on March 17th. I’m sure nobody will throw a shoe at him. Canuks are too polite for that.
I think it’s grand that Canada is granted the boon of a visit by not one, but two American presidents. When we’ve finished bankrupting ourselves completely and are forced to sell off the country for a pittance rather than suffer the indignity of a repossession, I’m sure we’ll all find welcome homes in the Great White North, courtesy of the diplomatic groundwork done by President Obama and former President Bush. And as a soon-to-be-blight-upon-the-Canadian-homeland, I for one look forward to learning just what the hell a Loonie will really buy you, these days
The people on the receiving end of these pie throwing attacks are too nice. Most people I know or who I grew up with, in the neighborhood I grew up in, would have beat the knucklehead pie throwers down like a wino slams a bottle of Two-Buck Chuck.
How come you never see a Putin or a Chavez get a pie in the face? Seems to me it’s only in societies where we’re all allowed to be as foolish as we wanna be (as opposed to “as bad as we wanna be”) that this sort of goofiness is tolerated. Use words to lay someone low. Not shaving cream or some other juvenile stunt.
Yup. Unfortunately, it’s about to become “Two-Fifty Chuck,” or something along that line. Cost of everything, even good old “Two Buck,” is going up out in Cali
Since we put NAFTA into place, US-Canada trade has become the largest such exchange between two countries in the world (factoid courtesy of NPR that I heard driving home from work this afternoon). It makes sense, and good neighborliness (if that’s a word), for Canada to be the first stop for the President.

What we need is an AMERICATHON!!! That way we can raise the money to stop forclosure by the National Indian Knitting Enterprise or whoever is buying America. You could be the MC.
While much of this is in jest - you are missing on a bit of Canadian history
Chretien (one of the pie victims) was a bit of a street brawler growing up in a steel town in Quebec. During his duration a prime minister, he had some yokel - while out on a walk in a park in Ottawa - come up and grab him by the jacket complaining about some perceived slight or the other. Chretien - before the RCMP could move in - essentially beat the crap out of the guy. Pies are just not considered a big deal - just a bit of fun between friends.
Canadian government ended up covering the assailant’s dental replacements. More socialized medicine I guess.
If you were fortunate enough to become the 11th province or 4th territory, talk to me, I will ease you into your path of bliss. Since I amnow ensocnced here becasue of love of an American women, let’s just consider it a rpisoner exhcange or something. I am not sure Canada deserves you, but they will appreciate you.
Agreed that in a day of economic issues the US should pay attention to its northern neighbour, but I hate to reveal to you that Canada was the US largest trading partner LOOOOOONG before NAFTA ever came into place. You, as a caunuck should know better.
What has Obama done re Canada so far; use trade with your country as a wedge issue to curry favor with unions. Realistically, he was there to ask for more soldiers to help in Afghanistan, yet there were rounds of “yes we can”. Pretty funny really. What he has done is not be GWB…you guys are easy to please.

In all fairness to Dubya, he was never a popular president, but he was good to Canada in as much as he didn’t mess with the NAFTA agreement. I’d be surprised if Canada is ending it’s mission in Afghanistan in 2011 as originally promised. I’m sure we’ll be there longer now that Obama is more committed.

Canada has sacrificed a lot in Afghanistan. Thank you.

My medical insurance doesn’t cover assaults by leaders of sovereign nations.
