1: This morning it was 29 Degrees outside, so instead of doing my 75 minute run, I got on my Computrainer instead. Am I a pussy for bailing out of my run because of the cold?
2: How cold must it be outside to where I can stay indoors and train and not have any guilt about it?
!) Yep, you’re a wimp;-) In all seriousiousity I’ve biked when it is below zero, let alone ran.
See above. I would run outside when it 20 below. Of course I’ve also ran indoors on a treadmill when its sunny and sixty just so i could do an interval workout at exactly a prescribed pace, so we’re all nuts in some way.
2: Hmm… 29F is what, -2C? I’d say -10C which is about -14F. Unless there’s significant wind chill. That sucks. Coldest run I ever did was -30C (-22F), that hurt. Same for xc skiing, coldest was -30C. I have heard that exercise below -35C (-31F) is bad for your lungs. Who knows if that’s true or not.
1 - I would say that you probably don’t have the right gear for running in the cold if you bailed - with the right clothing running outside in the winter is great!
2 - I’ve run on days where it is -30C and felt great - I worry more about the windchill than anything as I find that causes more discomfort than just cold. However, again if you have some good cold weather gear you’ll be fine with the windchill too.
It’s like my Mum always said, don’t bother coming back in unless you can’t feel your fingers or toes
Yes, you wimped. I’m thinking it would probably have been at least 32 by the time you finished.
The hardest part of running in this kind of cold weather, at least for me, is getting out the door. After that, it is usually fine. Wear lots of layers, make sure the inner ones are moisture breathing, and that the outer layers are adjustable for when you get warmed up.
My limit (to date) is 17 miles at 0 degrees (factoring wind chill, 14 degrees and 15-17 mph winds). When I got home, I found ice inside the outer couple of layers.
Sounds like a pussy move. Minus 25C is the cutoff up here in the frozen north, one step away from zero Kelvin (absolute zero, when all atoms seize to move)
No need to feel guilty, there’s a complex algorithm to calculate this based on how far away your A race is, and how much time you’ve spent in California/Arizona. You exceed the threshold, so don’t worry about it. If you couldn’t run in that weather and lived in the NE, then you’d be screwed.
Oh she always bundled us up and never really wanted us to freeze to death - however she didn’t want us to waste hours watching TV when we could have been outside doing any number of things
Mine didn’t move away, however when I moved away to university I forgot how much fun it was to be outside so much of the time and got fat - too bad I wasted those years because now I might actually be fast…
Definite wuss. I have yet to find a temperature which is too cold. I guess the coldest I have is around zero F, plus or minus 5F. As for the bike, 20 degree F is about my limit, mainly because i dont have the gear…
-25 is balmy weather in the Ottawa Valley in a normal year isn’t it? The coldest weather that I’ve ever run in is around -37C. I’ve been out when the wind chill was -42C and that was nasty since it was back in my university days when there wasn’t a good selection of high tech clothes to enable running in that kind of weather. My room mate and fellow U of W xc team member got frost bite on his neck from the zipper on his jacket that day.
Way below 29 degrees F. Up here in the Midwest 29 degrees is a great winter day to both run and ride outdoors. My coldest run thus far is -17 degrees F.
