Two IMs in 6 weeks, plus a third a week later; any suggestion on how to be still effective?

Some of you will probably think I’m a moron (could be), but I’d like to hear suggestions regarding ways to maintain top or at least decent form over a 6 weeks span.
My race schedule for next Spring/Summer includes IM Lanzarote on May 22; IM France on June 26 (my A races) and Quelle Challenge on July 4 (plus IM Zurich if all goes well).
Taking for granted that what I’ll strive for in Roth will be just surviving, I was wondering if I could actually race effectively both in Spain and in France.
Barring injuries I’m pretty confindent that I’ll be able to bring my “A” game to Lanzarote, but I’d like to hear what you guys think I should do (in terms of training) in the weeks leading to IM France.
Thanks
Filippo

Give Joe Boness a call. Some people in the Forum are his personal friends, I’m sure they can help you.

Paulo

A call to Joe Boness will not help. He’ll just tell you to get on the bike and pound out 600 mile weeks in between races :-). You need to get a DNA transplant of Joe Boness genetics :-).

Good luck. Sounds like an awesome schedule. I may be in Zurich on July 25th after riding in the Alpes (my flight home to Canada returns from Zurich) so if am there, I’ll dheer you on !

Dev

What do you mean by “You need to get a DNA transplant of Joe Boness genetics”? Are you implying that Joe has had some kind of illegal help for his performances???

Actually on the 29th/30th I’m supposed to try to run/walk the 100km del Passatore, a 106 km classic between Florence and Faenza, through the Appennines…
A friend of mine made me sign up for it, but I’m not sure I’m going, I gotta see how I feel after Lanzarote.

I would suggest seeing a doctor about your problem. If you are in Florida, I am sure I can find a few good psychologists for you.

You mean for that minor ache in my left quad? I will, don’t doubt!
On the other hand it’s funny how so many of the people I’ve talked to about it share the same ideas.
Me going to a shrink? Why?!?!
Oooops…

Smartasscoach, please do not take my comments out of context. I am just referring to how studly Joe is. He is a genetic freak and few of us can hope to match his performance and recovery capabilities, especially at his age !

Hmm well i thought i was the only nut, but when i read the thread it sounds like you are on the same crazy path. I think just get out and train hard but just taper , taper, taper between races and the last one with only a week rest, just give it your best, but do some easy training in the week, just to start the healing process. When you arrive at the end of your escapade, stop and ask yourself:

“whos the man!!”

Ironman Brazil, may 29th. Tupperlake june 25th. ITU World Long Course - Sater , Sweden July 3rd+4th. Ironman Lake Placid July 25th. (with a few sprints in between…just to keep everything going.)

“I am not an animal”

Six weeks, lots of time! Week one easy active recovery (no anaerobic), week two 3/4 volume moderate pace, week three full volume moderate pace, weeks four full volume and hard training pace, five cut volume back maybe some speed work if you feel great. Six speed work and taper.

Just easy active recovery between France and Roth, you should be faster at Roth than ever before. Roth will all be mental it is the easiest and fastest course, your in the best shape of your life but It will be a gigantic effort mentally.

Hey Filippo,

First off, and I think you already know this, you can do this. Great aspiration- congratulations on this project.

Secondly, in my opinion, this is going to be about maintenance and damage control. Practicing active recovery such as massage, good sleep and nutrition are absolutely key to getting through it.

I would also suggest you will have to race your first race with your third race in mind. I other words, you won’t be able to put a 100% effort into the first two races. I’m sure you already realized that.

Most importantly, good luck! Give us a report as time goes by.

Wow, I’m inspired by your lineup. That’s an incredible season. Best wishes, and please let us know how you pull it off.

I would probably ask this same question on Gordo’s forum (coachgordo.com). He’s not only a coach, but a guy who pounds out mega miles (epic camp, ultramarathons, etc) on occasion and may know more about this kind of thing. Also, Scott Molin, Chuckie V and others hang out on that sight and could give you good insight.

Good luck!

Thank you guys for the nice words. I’ll definitely let you how/if I pull it off.
I really hope to see some of you around Europe next Summer.
