Another possibility is pesticides. These developing nations have lax pesticide laws and controls and powerful industrial chemicals are often used in rooms next to occupied rooms. I would thing it would be a very easy thing to discover in an autopsy of her and the couple, to determine if they ingested something toxic. Especially since it seems the effect and death happened quickly.

I would thing it would be a very easy thing to discover in an autopsy of her and the couple, to determine if they ingested something toxic. Especially since it seems the effect and death happened quickly.
Drugs/toxins/pesticides/poisons are not overly hard to detect (usually).

His wife said he drank a bottle of liquor brought over from the DR, Santo Domingo specifically, and this immediately came to mind. I did a quick google search and it turns out hundreds have gotten sick since the initial story, some 30+ have died in the last few weeks alone. Apparently this guy never vomits from alcohol abuse, so it’s a bit suspicious.
