I will be heading to Shoreview Minnesota to do the Turtleman Triathlon next weekend. Anyone ever do this race? Please tell me what you thought of it. Also do you know if this is typically a wetsuit legal swim? I hate to drag my suit along if I won’t be using it.

The last couple of years the swim has been wetsuit legal, but I don’t know about the historical water temp beyond that. I like the race as it’s flat and fast. The only things that are a little dicey are that the bike course goes by the transition area twice and last year a couple bikers screwed that up somehow and that the transition is at the bottom of a short steep hill which typically results in some out of control bikers barrelling into T2. Also, they changed things up this year and the wave starts will be self-seeded waves of 100, with 5 minutes between waves. It will be itneresting to see how that goes, but I don’t think it will affect most of us too much, other than to let the fast swimmers group up a little better.
This will be my second and it’s a pretty good event. This year you get to self select when you want to begin. The lake is pretty nice and has been approved for wetsuits. Hard to imagine the water being too warm as cool as it’s been this year. I didn’t like all the cones for the bike event. There is not really enough safe room to pass and I had to ride around most of the cones and was really paranoid I’d be DQ’d for doing so. I’m not sure what the rule is and no one yelled at me. You need to remember to go past the ride out and do one little loop of the run course before going in to do the run. That said I did enjoy this one as one of the top events.
