Turn off the body camera, get canned

The way it should be.

The way it should be.

Now, now, that would be sensible, and we can’t have that.

Amen to that.

I suspect it’s more than just a mere turning the camera off. The article lists both insubordination and untruthfulness. The officer claimed that he had the cmera on and that he hadn’t turned it off, that he didn’t know what happened. And while the manufacturer hasn’t been able to verify the truthfulness of that story, I suspect the department believes it had evidence that he lied. In most departments, lying during during an IA interrogation, especiallly on a material point, will get you canned.

If it had merely been the officer turning the camera off, then it would arguably have been insubordination, but probably would have resulted in some discipline less than termination. Of course, the level of discipline would also have considered other factors, such as th officer’s disciplinary history. My guess is that it was some alleged dishonesty that put it over the top.

Well good. And if it isn’t a policy to terminate for turning them off it should be. I’m not saying one and done. But if there is a pattern or it happens when a major event happens, we’ll see ya.

The victim is white. What race is the cop, not once do they mention his race? Where is the outrage? Burn the fucking city down!!!

There was plenty of protest and outrage over the white homeless camper that police killed.

This is a good start. I know a few cops, and several of them have gotten body cameras despite the fact that they’re not required to do so. They figure that it might result in less time spent giving testimony, should the need arise.

I’d also be in favor of cops’ firearms being rigged with sensors, as well. (I’m not the first to suggest this.) With little more than the sensor package found in a smart phone, you could record direction, elevation, and time of each shot fired - maybe even stamping the info on the camera feed.

Any cities torched?

I just find it odd that in this article it is not mentioned once what race the cop was. That seemed to be the most important detail in the Furguson case.

Also not once in this article is the cop accused of murder.

The camper that was killed… that is a ridiculous case. He never should have been killed, they certainly over reacted. This stuff happens and rarely if ever is it actually race related.

I doubt most people who studied that thought it was an over reaction. I believe you are talking about the homeless camper with a knife who turned toward police and was in the lethal zone of 21 feet. you may have thought it was an over reaction, but I doubt anything comes of it and it will be ruled justified.

I watched the video. Looks further than 21 feet.

Also it that 21 feet based on a flat surface or a rocky hill like this one? Not fucking chance that guy gets anywhere near those police on that territory.

But you’re probably right, nothing will come of this.

This stuff happens and rarely if ever is it actually race related.

Depends on what you mean by “race related.” Data shows that blacks are far more likely to die during arrests or while in custody than whites or latinos. (although the article points out that better data is needed).

Does that mean that the killings are a racist act by cops? Not necessarily. Blacks are also much more likely to have encounters with police in the first place. There’s a crime problem among blacks occupying lower rungs on the economic ladder. That could explain the statistics. But given that there is statistically strong evidence of racial bias in other aspects of criminal justice, I don’t think you can definitively say that there is absolutely no bias against blacks during encounters with police.

Even if there is no bias by cops, the raw disparity is enough that we need to go out of our way to cleanse articles about shooting from any mention of race in order to be politically correct.

It’s a little irresponsible to not seperate those that protest from those criminals that utilize a protest to commit crimes. I have not found a single person that has openly supported rioting and looting as a reasonable response.

Not necessarily. Blacks are also much more likely to have encounters with police in the first place. There’s a crime problem among blacks occupying lower rungs on the economic ladder. That could explain the statistics.

Yes, in fact if you adjust for arrests the number evens out and or possibly flips, you are more likely to die in custody when arrested as as a white person then you are a black person.

But given that there is statistically strong evidence of racial bias in other aspects of criminal justice, I don’t think you can definitively say that there is absolutely no bias against blacks during encounters with police.

When there is a significant different level of crimes committed in a certain area or by a certain race why would we expect for their to be no bias when dealing with that sector.

Forget race for a moment and tell me that there is no bias among police officers when arresting and patrolling in the best part of a town or the worst part of town. Odds are that if they pull someone over in a neighborhood full of million dollar homes that the person in the car will be of little threat to them and odds are they will not be participating in any other illegal activity. Like it or not that is not true in the worst parts of a town. Furthermore like it or not that is going to create a bias. You’re not looking for a reason to search a car for weapons and drugs in the million dollar neighborhood. You are in the bad parts of town.

We can argue all day long if this is right or wrong, but it is far more effecient and quite possibly simply human nature, regardless of race. I’d bet dollars to donuts that a black cop is going to be biased in the same manner as a white cop as far as good neighboorhood and bad neighborhood. After all it’s their ass on the line and odds are they aren’t getting grief from a middle aged rich dude coming home from a board meeting and odds are that same guy doesn’t have a gun under the seat.

Even if there is no bias by cops, the raw disparity is enough that we need to go out of our way to cleanse articles about shooting from any mention of race in order to be politically correct.

Can’t we take this even further. IF we were truly trying to stop irritating race relations in the US wouldn’t it make sense to not report at all about relative non news stories, at least until we know they are news stories? That applies to a pretty good portion of all “News” these days where the media seems more interested in simply getting something out there, getting ratings and getting attention then they are about reporting news and getting the facts right.

Sounds like Omerta.

What’s your math there?

When there is a significant different level of crimes committed in a certain area or by a certain race why would we expect for their to be no bias when dealing with that sector.

I do not understand that question.

There have been some pretty rigorous studies that show significant racial bias even when corrected for socio-economic status. And when corrected for the type of crime. You could do a study that show isolates socio-economic status, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a strong “bias” according to socio-economic status and independently of race. Maybe all these protestors are confusing the two, since most of these black kids getting killed are poor. Maybe they’re not. We don’t know for sure because the data isn’t there. Yet.

For this issue I don’t think there’s any monolithic “media” you could engineer to suit your idea of what news should be. There’s a spectrum ranging from NYT to celebrities on Twitter. There’s no central control.

In any case, what’s wrong with “irritating” race relations? If we just stop talking about it then you can pretend a problem doesn’t exist? There is a problem. I think it’s good to talk about problems. Blacks have a crime problem. The U.S. criminal justice system has at least some race problems. This Ferguson issue is kind of in the intersection of those two. Worth talking about. Charles Barkley isn’t afraid to talk about it - and very rationally. I think it’s wrong for white people to get all defensive about it, like the St. Louis police association getting pissed off at the Rams. That’s a tribal attitude, per Barkley’s comments. Of course many protesters also have an irrational tribal attitude. Sharpton. But my response to irrational response to real problems isn’t to try to shut everyone up, but to highlight rational response, e.g. Barkely.

HOLY CRAP…that helmet cam is amazing!

This is deplorable police tactics though. Yikes…kind of embarrassing for them. Sure they might have had a ***legal ***right to kill the guy, but what they did was wrong. They instigated the situation and cornered a guy who clearly was not mentally capable of doing the right thing. Then they gave him no easy way out, and then a flash bang? WTF do you think a homeless guy will do with a flash bang? A guy that has probably had to “fight or flight” his entire life. His biological response will be to defend himself, and you can tell as he comes to his senses and appears to maybe realize that…they shoot him. Then to pour it on, as he’s laying there dying they are yelling orders at him and shooting him with bean bags for not doing what they say (even though he’s moaning and clearly dying and saying “I can’t move”). The cherry on top: cuffing him after he’s dead. Good job boys (I get that this is policy, but whatever happened to common sense?).

Watching again, now I’m not so sure…in the beginning the guy is ranting that if they were at a bar or a bus stop he would have a right to kill them because they are trying to “take him over”?

He also says, “Don’t get stupid with me” and the cops say “we are not going to get stupid” He also says “don’t go loco on me” and “keep your word, and I can try to keep you safe”…

That kind of crazy talk would make me nervous. I am curious why they went with the flash bangs though. He picks up his backpack and then you can see the cops get ready (raise guns) and the shooter says “do it”. They must have seen something we did not (is this the point where he grabs knives? Looks to me like he just grabbed a water bottle or something).

Right before being shot, I think I hear the perp say “Don’t make me kill people” or something to that regard.

All that said…as stupid as this may have been it was probably the only option the guy left them…?

Ugh these things are never easy.

I supported the riots, not because I thought it was reasonable. I’m just a good judge of character (or lack thereof) and I like chaos. I especially like it when the people Rioting are only damaging their own community.

Apparently Michael brown’s dad thought it was reasonable.
