The tape is convenient and easy. For a novice to tire gluing it will be much easier to use.
I have some wheels glued with the tufo tape, but have not yet had a reason to unmount them. So I don’t know about the hassle of removal and cleaning although some people have reported that it’s easier than typical glue.

It has been said (and I believe it) that the tufo tape results in a wheel with more rolling resistance. It makes sense as it leaves a more supple surface on which the tire can deform while rolling. If you are talking about preparing your super-snazzy race wheels you wouldn’t want to hamper the rolling resistance would you?

Have you ever made a positive comment or is your life that miserable. Sorry I’m not an expert “slowtwitcher” like you Chubby!

It is a good begginner’s way to easily install tubulars.

I used it for about twenty tires (maybe more) before realizing that properly gluing them was a sine qua non condition to get the most out of tubulars.

I would still use tape in a pinch, but if you are going to use tubulars, you better go for the whole enchilada.

Gluing tubulars is not that difficult, but the learning curve might be steep if you are doing it without good advice.

I’ve tried both gluing and taping.

if you’re not corning hard, and you’re not using a carbon rim, you might be fine with tape. It does feel slower than glue though… there seems to be more glue deformation with tape than glue, resulting in higher rolling resistance.

If you corner hard (particularly if you use the wheels in a crit), or you have carbon rims, glue is the way to go. Multiple coats (2-3), 24 hours between each coat, plus a coat on the tires themselves.

I’ve rolled a tire while using tape before… final corner of a crit, and I was in 3rd wheel and in perfect position to win the race. I never crossed the finish line. I’ve since used only glue.

Did you roll the tire off using Tufo extreme or just the regular?

Extreme. and the weather wasn’t even hot.

it’s easier to put on, but can be a pain if it comes off in chunks when you want to remove the tire later on. I’s not as good as a well glued tire in heavy rain and standing water, which is why people use it plus glue for cyclocross (another messy topic in itself).

If you flat on the road, I assume you would be putting your spare onto a bare rim, which isn’t a great idea, maybe people use spares with tape stuck to them already, I dunno.

Glue isn’t anything to be scared of in reality, it’s just kind of sticky.

EEK.
I’ve got my tubulars Extreme taped on. Literally the only glue in town was a single tube of Tubasti. I bought it, but my preferred LBS recomended the Extreme tape and since I don’t race crits I figured I would probably be safe.

You should be safe. The tape is only a small percentage less tacky than the glue and if your tire is properly inflated there’s a lot of motivation to stay on the rim anyway. Many people have rolled tires off in crits even with glued tires, so don’t start feeling insecure about your tape.

Just say no. Even if AFM’s most recent testing proves out and it isn’t as muddy slow as it feels…it still runs slower than a proper glue job. Why knowingly sabotage your forward progress?
