Tufo Tape Residue (And Other Tubular Questions...)

  1. How long do I need to stretch a tire on the rim before it is “stretched”?

  2. Can I stretch a tubuluar by putting it on a clincher rim (haven’t tried it, so I’m not even sure I could get it on, but I don’t want to try if it would be bad for the tire)? (I am asking because I want to stretch my spares, but I also want to mount my tires and have only one set of tubular wheels.)

And lastly, the one that is making me crazy…

  1. How do I get the residue from the Tufo tape off? Or can I glue over it? I am going back to glue after one round with the tape… When I’ve removed regular tubular glue, I’ve used 3-in-1 oil and let it soak into the glue overnight and then used a soft scrubbing pad to get it off, but the glue was hardened and not so thick as the Tufo tape residue… Anyone who has taken off the tape residue, what did you do??

Thanks…

  1. Overnight works for me.

  2. Carefully, I sit on the ground, put the tubie around both feet and pull with my hands. It can probably take more than I dish out, but I’m paranoid.

  3. Residue on the rim from the tape? I thought that wasn’t supposed to happen. I use goo gone for tubular glue, not sure what to do about the tape.

2.) If you have a local shop that you buy from frequently, see if they have an old tubular rim that you can have gratis. Or you can buy just one rim extra, about 25-60 bucks.

I just removed the tape residue from my Reynolds. I tried several different things but simply using my thumb was the best. The residue will roll into balls and come off. It took about 30 minutes per wheel. Goof-Off and paint thinner turned the tape residue into a huge mess so I don’t think that the chemical route will work very well. Have fun.

i agree that goo gone works great on tubular glue, any idea if it is harmful to carbon fiber? i have a bunch of tape residue on my seatpost from bike number stickers, duct taping spare to post etc. and would like to take it off. i used the goo gone to get some glue off the surface of my disk with no problem but haven’t tried it on the carbon rims or seatpost yet.

Pretty sure Zipp recommends the goo gone.
