I am considering moving to Tucson. I hear that for the majority of the year it is awesome weather, but in the summer there is four months or so when it is 110-120 degrees. A few questions, some weather related and some not:
(1) Is the hot summer the off season in tucson, similar to how my Washington winter with eight feet of snow is my off season?
(2) How do people train in the 120 degree weather? Run at 3:00 am?
(3) When is the racing season in Tucson?
(4) What is the running/cycling/masters swimming/tri community like near the UA?
(5) I’ll be attending graduate school at the UA; where is a safe part of town to live?
(2) How do people train in the 120 degree weather? Run at 3:00 am?
You train early in the morning, but not that early. Try to be on the bike be 0500 to
0530. You can normally start a little later on the run (since you don’t run as
long as you bike).
You can swim anytime, just have to watch out for sunburn.
(1) Is the hot summer the off season in tucson, similar to how my Washington winter with eight feet of snow is my off season?
Umm from what I understand not really. The off season (training all the time, no races) is usually November (unless your doing IMAZ) to February or March. Most races don’t occur then even in the surrounding places like Phoenix and California.
(2) How do people train in the 120 degree weather? Run at 3:00 am?
Either really early in the AM like 5 or 530 like someone else said or running at 9 or 930 at night. You can swim whenever during the day though!!
(3) When is the racing season in Tucson?
Racing season is usually february or march until october. Some small local sprint races in feb and march but then their are olympic size races in tucson and phoenix the rest of the year pretty much. A lot of people come up here to Phoenix to race form tucson because we have more races held here I believe. During the summer their are still races and it’s hot as hell once your on the run, a lot of us like to go to California for a few weeks to race since it is only a 7 hour drive away.
(4) What is the running/cycling/masters swimming/tri community like near the UA?
Couldn’t tell ya. I used to live in tucson, now in Phx.
(5) I’ll be attending graduate school at the UA; where is a safe part of town to live?
If you want to stay close to the u of a i really don’t know, if you dont mind a 20minute drive to school then the foothills is a very nice area to live, and safe. Sabino canyon area also but that is a further drive.
This is the UA triathlon club team. Extremely well run and a lot of fun. There are many members of varying levels of athletic ability. There are undergrads, grad students, and non-students on the team. We do pretty well in our races from collegiate nationals to local sprints. The team was able to fund four races this year for members through various fundraising activities. We have several great sponsors like FLUID and TRISPORTS.COM. This is the team to be on if you come to the UA.
