Tubulars for racing wheels

Hi,

I have a pair of new tubular Ritchey Carbon wheels (like Zipp 404’s) that I need to set up. From looking over past posts I know that Tufo’s apparently suck, and that Vittorias and Zipp tubulars are pretty good. I will only be using these wheels for TT’s and triathlons and not to train on. I’m also looking to spend ~$75-$80 a tire, but now that I have these nice wheels I don’t want to put a crap tire on them. I plan on carrying a spare (I might buy a tufo for my spare since they are inexpensive and I’m poor). Any tubular recommendations, specifically the model and not just the brand would be appreciated.

The Tufos being tested are the cheap ones.

Continental Competitions have been good to me. Make sure you stretch them good, especially around the valve stem. Very, very good puncture resistance.

I’m quite impressed with my new Veloflex Criteriums. They also have good reviews on roadbikereview.com

I like Conti Comp’s, but may go w/ Zipps when I replace them. You can find the Conti’s at a good price at biketiresdirect.com, and you can find the Zipps at bicycledoctor.net.

I third the recommendation for Conti Comp’s and the best price I have seen ever on them is from www.biketiresdirect.com
.

I’d vote for the Vittoria Corsa CX or KS (same tire, different tread pattern - nice that you can choose). The Continental Competition would also be a good choice.

Ok, so if I go with the Conti Competition, what glue should I use, Conti’s brand or go with the Vittoria glue that everyone seems to mention? Does it make a difference?

I’ve never heard anything bad about conti’s, but for the record, my lbs currently chooses to use vittoria to glue on conti tyres.

What are the shitty tufo’s that everyones talking about? I just bought the tufo S3 Lite’s. Can someone enlighten me whats wrong with them? Please tell me I didn’t blow $70 per tire (X3) on a sub-par tubular.
