Tubular width -- race wheels

What size tires go best on a set of Zipp 404’s? I am probably going to put Conti Competition GP’s. These will be primarily for ironman distance. Is it better to have a 19 front, 22 rear, or both 22mm. I have never ridden a 19. Would the ride be rough?

If you are looking at long races (half IM to IM) you would probably want the 19 front, 22 rear combo…just for comfort. If you are looking at shorter races, go with 19s on both.

I have zipp 909’s front and back and went with 19mm conti podiums (tubular) at around 120 psi last year for two 1/2 IM’s and multiple oly’s and sprints without problem. I weigh 165 and am 5’10". Never felt like I got beat up with road buzz.

It depends on the road surface - smooth surface thinner. You also need to factor in distance.

I use a Campy Ghibli disc and an HED3 front. I use Tufo 19mm at 160psi, front and rear, when I race. I’ll race from sprints to 1/2 IM this year. But, I also use 2 beam bikes, so the harshness is gone!!

I’d run Tufo Elite Jet 20mm front and rear. this is a great size and durable tire for any distance. USe the crazy inflation pressure for super smooth courses.

Enjoy,
