Tubular tire losing pressure

A friend of mine just had a shop put a Zipp tangent tubular tire on his Zipp 1080 wheel. He will put 120 psi in the tire and within 3 days the tire is completely flat. Is this normal?

I would expect the tubular to lose some pressure, but not go completely flat.

Thanks for anyone’s help with this.

it probably has a latex tube inside, they provide less rolling resistance but lose air quicker
.

normal for any tire with a latex tube
.

Yup, Vittoria’s do this as well. As long as it is 3 days and not 3 hours.

I had the same problem with my rear 404 tubular. I put 3 $90 tires on it within 200 miles. All of them held air for about 48 hrs, then went flat. I probably didnt need the last 2 tires. My LBS was not concerned , The regional Zipp rep said it wasnt the wheel, (I actually thought it was the valve stem extender thingy, the LBS put 3 diff ones on, they all got loose) He was kind of preturbed I called him.(the Zipp rep-Kansas) Long story short I gave those wheels to my daughter, she cant change a tire anyway. I told her to air them pre race, and I mean just pre race and they will be fine.

I actually got me a tri bike this winter, and I chose the 09 B2 PRO over the DA, because it has clinchers, and the DA has tubies. Im not going there again.

BTW: my front 404 tubie would hold air indeffinately.

If your buddy is really worried switch to Conti Comps or Tufo’s as those both seem to hold air forever… My Tangente’s and similar Vittorias all loose pressure pretty quickly. They are killer tires though on freshly groomed courses. Just not that durable…

If it’s truly “completely flat”, that seems a bit fast, even for a latex tube. Have him check the valve stem/valve core for leaking. If it’s not that, then perhaps the tube has a leak inside the tire somewhere…might want to try some Vittoria Pit Stop to see if that helps prior to replacing the tire.

I am having a similar situation . I mounted a pair of Brand new Continental Sprinters on my ZIPP 606 . The Front one holds pressure fine but the rear tire loses pressure overnight and in 36 hours feels really soft but not completely flat . I dont think it is a hole or a leaking extender but perhaps due to the latex tube . But then why wouldnt the front tire be losing pressure ? If I were to put tufo sealant inside the rear tire or Vittoria Pit stop would that plug the pores inside ?

I don’t think Continentals have latex tubes…

Check the valve body and the extender joints.

This is fairly normal for Tangente tires (and most latex tubed tubulars). I can not explain why some leak down more than others, but i have noticed that all go from 60 lbs or so to 0 overnight. The only thing that seems to vary is how long it takes them to leak down to 60.

I am by no means an expert on this, but I have several sets of demo wheels, all with tangente tires, all do this. It has never caused a problem other than a few extra strokes with the pump.

This is normal for tubular tires…I learned this the hard way when I purchased my Zipp 303s. They would lose air by the day.
However, they ride way better than clinchers and I never get flats!
I think overall tubulars are better. Hey the pros use them

it could be worse if they were filling it with C02 as well instead of a normal pump.

if you had latex tubes on your clinchers
they would ride just as nice
and lose air too =)

I’ve got conti’s on mine and they hold constant pressure for days. The type loss you describe is nuts.

thats because contis do not have a latex tube so are sloewr.

however when Conti provides a tubie for a pro cyclist, they give him latex tubes.

why does Conti hate us?

15-30mL of Stan’s is way cheaper than a can of the pittstop
