Ok…so I am doing my very best to get all the stupid shit out of my way prior to IM Moo.
So yesterday I went for a training ride. I just raced Sunday and was going to change to my training wheels, but got lazy. I have also been meaning to change the tires on my race wheels as I purchased the wheels with tires already on. I had never changed a tubie…and wanted to give it a shot.
So of course I run into a big crack on the road and sssssssssssssssssss there goes my back tire.
So part of me is thinking this is great. Trial by fire. So I know the concept of replacing this thing on the road…just never seen it. SO I go about ripping off the old tire. The previous owner did a good job of gluing. I was sweating from that more than from my actual ride. Finally got that thing off of there and I’m pretty happy.
I grab the new tire…get it on the rim and try to put in the valve extender only to realize I should have done that first. So I fiddle around and get it in there. Try the CO2 only to screw that up. I must be the only idiot in the world that can’t work the C02 gun. Anyway, with one C02 gone, I only have one left. So I figure I better be safe and double check everything. So I rip the wheel off, check the actual valve…put the tire back on but notice the extender is a bit loose so I mess with it to tighten it up. Next thing I know the extender is totally loose. I’m like…wtf is happening? So I pull the whole thing apart only to realize the valve from the tire itself is stuck in the freaking wheel…it’s a deep rim Stinger 90. WTF do I do now…the valve is rattling around. I didn’t bring 2 tubes…so even if I could figure out the Co2 I couldn’t fill the tire.
So…I admitted defeat and called the wife. Went to wheel and sprockett and they were like “oh f*ck”. They had me shake the wheel until it fell out. yippee. I also purchased a Co2 gun with a trigger…since I am too stupid to work the other kind.
All that leads me to a question on properly putting the new tire on. I have a couple spares and I plan to stretch them both prior to putting the new tire on. But there is still glue on the rim from the previous tire…do I need to clean that off?
Also, can someone explain the process of gluing a tire on properly? Do I put the glue on the tire and let it dry? I thought I read that somewhere…and then put the tire on the rim?
I could do a search…but I figure the story about the village idiot (me) was worth a post.
