Has anyone had experience using tubular tape for road racing as well at TTs?
does it hold up as well on the corners and keep the tub from rolling off?
The last thing I want is to cause a pile up.
Thanks!
Road racing or crits?
Have you ever had a problem with just glueing your tires?
Crits and Road Racing.
I am getting my first set of tubular wheels next week, so I am new at this.
Last year I was riding home from an event during a very heavy rainstorm. Two days later, I noticed that the Tufo Extreme Tape was kind of melting, the tire was lifting at the edges.
I removed the tape, cleaned the rim and went back to gluing my tubbies. For my peace of mind, glue is as good as it gets.
I’ve used it for 3 years now and no problems, just on my race wheels for Triathlon. I use the extreme tape but I did hear from my LBS that they don’t recommend the extreme since it can melt in high temps. I did race IMAZ last year (90+ degrees) again with no problems.
The main reason I like it is if I flat on a training ride a day before the race I can still put a new tube on without waiting the day or so to glue a new one…
If you search “tufo tape” there are a lot of old threads.
I rolled a tire going through the last corner of a race; I was actually soloing off the front for what would have been my first (and actually would still have been my only) road victory. Obviously, I did not get it, and I’m still a pathetic cat 4. As such, I hate tubular tape.
Even if 49 other people tell you it’s good, and you have only my dissenting opinion, you still have a 1 in 50 chance of your tire rolling with tape. Some people like to live dangerously!
I will never use the glue tape again as it becomes a messy pain if you change tires due to flats
or use different tires for different conditions. I worry as some say the tape is only good for 2
tire changes.
