Can anyone who uses the tubular tape just give me a quick “how to” and “what not to do” with this stuff. i am getting the new wheels tomorrow and would like to mount the tires tomorrow night with this stuff.
Also, what should I use on the rim to clean off the old glue?
I believe there was a post from konabro2 a couple of days ago regarding tubular tape, and his experience, which was not good.
I’ve used it once. Remember to wet the tape once it is on the rim and before you add the tire, this will help a little to move the tire in place, 'cause once the tire is on, it’s on!
it’s ok to wet the side of the tape that the tire will seat on, but i wouldn’t do it to the side that adheres to the rim, that will not aid tire installation and could prevent the tape from attaching to the rim, which will cuase a tire roll.
“Remember to wet the tape once it is on the rim and before you add the tire…”
If you follow these instructions, how can you wet anything but the side of the tape that adheres to the tire? For some great help on mounting check out www.nimble.net and look under the topic More info for the link.
Regarding my recent experience, I suugest to glue it and dump the tape. Much easier and you’ll have a better feeling about removing the tire during a race should you have a flat.
Egads no! Don’t use the regular tape. Use the tufo “extreme” tape. Then this won’t be an issue. The extreme tape has plastic on both sides. You peel off one side, then put it on the rim.
Then peel back a tiny bit of the plastic from the other side. Mount the tire and adjust it (very easy to do since the stickyness isn’t exposed yet). Once you get the tire just where you want it, grab the loose bit of plastic and pull it off. Voila, the tire sticks on.
You don’t wet the gluing tape!!! You do wet the tape on the tire though.
Tape is first applied to the clean rim. The wider side of the tape goes towards the rim. This is supposed to be the stickier adhesive. The adhesive on the side facing the tire is supposed to be slightly weaker so the tape stays on the rim when you remove the tire. To wet the tire backing tape, I just run a wet rag across the tire to get the cloth tape damp, but not soaked. Positioning the tire was no problem. I can’t tell from experience on tire removal yet, but I can say that the standard tape is holding my tires on very securely.
