Alright, I haven’t found anything that describes my “problem” in the search, so here it is:
I’m new to tubulars and just glued some Vittoria’s onto my '02 Zipp 404’s. The front tire is making a “clicking” noise each time the valve side hits the ground. It doesn’t make the sounds when I spin the tire on the stand, so it has something to do with the pressure from the ground.
Ideas?
Kevin
interesting. last year, I rode Conti sprinters and noticed the “hop” at the valve that’s been described here. switched to Vittoria this year, no problem.
hoe’s this? they’re a bit underinflated, you glued them on a little crooked, so when the valve side hits the ground, it causes the valve to bow out and strike a spoke?
just speculating
It’s not hitting a spoke, it’s nowhere close. There’s no “hop” to it, I don’t feel anything, it’s just the sound.
I’ may have glued it crooked and it’s hitting the side of the valve hole?
that’s what I was thinking - the tire is slightly crooked, and the valve is striking something something while under pressure.
Here’s the obvious question - did you go to a bike shop?
Not yet. I just rode on it this a.m. and then came to work.
I mounted it myself, if that’s the question.
What valve extender are you using? could it be hitting on the inside?
Not sure what type it is (it isn’t Zipp). I got it at B&L here in SD. There’s no markings on it, so I don’t know the maker.
I just had a Conti Comp glued to my Zipp 404 and I get the same clickling noise when I ride, but a quarter turn from the valve. I had the bike store re-glue the “clicking” area it but the clicking persists. The bike store says it is the tire. It bugs me.
Does it screw over the tires valve stem or does it replace the tires valve core? Simply look at the valve, if it looks “normal” with the little screw down thing on the end then it is the type that replaces the core.
The one that screw over the tires valve can be a source of problems like what you describe.
i had a similar problem with mine.
it turned out that i had missed a small spot with the adhesive and the clicking was coming from the tub attaching a reattaching every time the area came in contact with the ground. try regluing it and recentering the tube and stem and see if it fixes the problem
I’ll try re-gluing that spot and see if it helps.
To “mount” the extender, I took out the existing core, screwed on the extender, then put the core into the end of the extender.
If you still are having problems after regluing, you may want to see if you can get your LBS mount up the tire. I have done this with my race wheels so they are right on the money for a A race.
the tri store here in Minne has always been happy do do it for me for no charge. Its nice since i spend almost every extra dime I have thier and a set of race tubulars are not cheap anyways and it only take thier guys a few minutes to get it on.
