I have decided that I need to use tub tape as otherwise I cant change punctures while out training and I have to be able to as I get soooo many of the damn things!
At the moment I have TUFO tyres and tape but the tyres seem to puncture too easy. Can someone recomment a different tyre and tape mix? I tried using a bontager tyre with the tufo tape and it did not seem to be a good stick so I just removed it again. I am going away on a weeks cycle training to Mallorca in 2 weeks and need to have this sorted by then. Any help would be great as this is my first taste of tubs!
remove the valve core and add about 1/4 cup of Stans No Tubes sealant and your tires will not get flats very often. It works really well. I use the continental sprinters to train on and the gatorskins in the winter. If the roads are really chewed up I use a heavy duty clincher like the bontrager hard case
Hi, Thanks for the reply. My tyres are full of the sealant and yes it does help but they get chewed up pretty bad. I know it doesnt help that I am out in the rain and cold but I have to be able to change my tyres if needed. Do you use tape or cement? Do you know if I can use the TUFO Extreme tape with other tyre brands?

I use the mastic glue or sometimes for road training tires just use some 3m fast tac on the rime but not the base tape, it holds fine. The conti gator skin tires are going to be the best bet for a heavy duty tubular for training, though they are pretty slow. You can use the tape with any tire, I don’t much like it. If you use glue but don’t go crazy with it the tires can be changed outpretty fast, you have to re glue when you get home. I often use fast tac for this, i remove the spare and pack it back in my seat bag then mount up a new tire and I’m all set. Since the spare is a used tire it already has some glue on it which helps keep it stuck on.
If the roads are total crap, using a clincher like an armadillo, bontrager hard case or maxxis re fuse might be required. They are awful to ride on but we need to use them in the winter as our roads are treated with sharp slag for de icing.
So to recap - I should take off the tyre I have now, glue a pair of the gator skins on, remove them as spares and then glue a new pair on? If I puncture I just re mount the spares (as they still have some glue on them) and then when i get home I glue them down again?
why not just rip off the tufos for spares or run them until they flat? Just don’t race on the gatorskins, they are pretty heavy and slow
The Tufos are dead. They have only done 300 to 400km but the weather has been bad and the slate on the roads has ripped them to shreds. This is why I want something stronger that will do more than 400km! its an expensive milage otherwise. I have just ordered some gatorskins, cement and tape. Now the only problem is I will need a car to follow me around and carry all the spare gear! anyone have ideas about carrying spare tubulars? would you just take 1 in case and hope that the sealant does the rest?
Thanks again
Johan
I carry two tubulars, a frame pump and a multi tool. It’s kind of heavy but so what, I use this bag it works fine, you have to take a littler care to get 2 tires to fit but it works fine and has two little zipper pockets on the sides.
If your roads are so bad they cut up the gatorskins, just switch to some clincher wheels with either a bontrager hard case or specialized armadillo tire, 23 or if your frame will accept them use 25c size. they ride like a garden hose but seldom get flats.

Hi again, quick update.
Went out and got a set of the gator skins, also some rim cement. Stuck them on last night - that is not a fun job! got covered in the stuff but it seems to have worked a treat! also I rode the bike this morning and I dont have any razor sharp stones in the tyres!!! This is a big improvement as I always used to when ever I looked at my tyres!
The cement I got was stuff you just put on the rim, leave 10 minutes then mount the tyre and pump and leave for 2 hours…I have to say though that the tyres were quite tight and I cant see them coming off by accident anyway.
Thanks for the heads up on the tyres…big big help. Will do 70k this eve and if I come back with no puncture then you are a hero!
As they say in these parts (Denmark) Tak (thanks)!

just use a very thin coat of that cement on the rim and let it dry overnight. Stretch the tire first by mounting and inflating on the rim without glue and it will go on easier. If you get the glue on the rim, use soem lacquer thinner to clean it off or the brakes will not work so well
good luck
Since you live in denmark there may be some other options from Schwable or Michelin for heavy duty tubulars also
