So I have mounted one tubie in my life…over 20 years ago with the supervision of a very seasoned wheel builder/LBS owner.
I finally want to do this myself. I have patience and time and enjoy all around wrenching so this is a process I’m looking forward to tackling. With that said I have no desire to ‘reinvent the wheel’ for lack of a better term. I want to learn from others and avoid pitfalls. The LBS guys here refuse to let me watch so it’s either do it myself or pay them…don’t know anyone else who can.
Any web sites, tips or otherwise for a new gluer? I’m ready to learn!
Also, as far as things I will want to own please don’t be afraid to suggest that too:
He makes it look so simple with the Tufo tape, so simple I may have to give tape a shot when I glue my road rims sometime next week (race bike only gets Mastik).
My method:
Stretch tire by inflating tire on rim, dry, for a few days before mounting.
Put 2 coats of Mastik on the rim
Put 2 coats of Mastik on the tire
Let both dry for about an hour
Mount tire, inflate to proper pressure
I can do a couple of sets in a couple of hours. Depending on the glue you use, make sure you have ventilation - I had a headache for about 36 hours the last time I glued tires over the winter (I glued 3 sets in my kitchen).
I’d recommend Mastik One - tests strongest by ~ 10% over Conti plus it dries very fast - very little tackiness after ~ 15 minutes. I stretch the tire for a couple of days and then put a couple coats on both the rim and tire - at least 4 hours between coats. After the second coat is dry on the base tape I will stretch the tire again on a stretching rim - the glue soaks into the base tape and seems to shrink the tire (especially if the base tape doesn’t have a latex coating). Then apply the final coat to the rim and wait 15 - 60 minutes before installing the tire. You will have to inflate and then center the base tape on the rim and roll the wheel on the ground while putting pressure on it - some just go for a short ride around the block. This method will consume ~ 2 tubes of glue (30 grams each) per wheel. You will get good Crr but it is difficult to get the tire off by hand although some have indicated that a razor blade can be used to cut the tire and then pull it off. Good luck.
