TTT California cancelled!

Oh wow, that is a shame. I LOVE the Ohio race (actually, my favorite race(s) I’ve ever done) and was looking forward to doing the CA one next year. I just assumed the CA one would be a hit with “so many” (or at least that is the rumor) triathletes in CA.

Bummer, I was considering this race this year if a kona slot didn’t pan out.

“I would bet money that most triathletes in California do not know about this race. Was it advertised anywhere besides here? I’m pretty sure the vast majority of SF people who are not on Slowtwitch had no idea of the race.”

Exactly! I’m on Slowtwitch (probably too much) and even I don’t remember hearing about this event.

Good bet. I still don’t know what it is.

Rats, I already got my Calf. TTT tattoo.

No really I was watching this one and was seriously thinking about doing it, but was waiting until the June 1st price increase to enter. I guess Redman will have to do.

HFPman, if you reopen it up I will enter now if that would help.

i too was bummed to get that email. was really looking forward to doing this one. nice of them to offer up Ohio, but not enough time for me to change plans, arrange time off work, etc. at this point.
really a shame as it sounded like great venue for a great race

I think the event itself sounds like a better experience than an Ironman. I remember finishing the Laguna Phuket triathlon and immediately thinking, ‘that was so awesome, I really wish I could have something to eat, and line up to start the swim and do the race again.’ The chance to do a few races in three days, thus, was really appealing. I also signed up for Keith Jordan’s three day Black Fly Triathlon. I think Triple T Ohio is partly successful because Gordo and some others talked about how great it was as training for IMLP and other events. So California did not have that appeal. I’m not sure why everything has to be about doing or training for a standardaized distance race. Are PR’s that important? Why would 101 or Triple T that is not merely training for an IM not get big numbers? And for that matter, why did Nice have to change to a standaridized distance IM instead of a ‘Nice’ distance race? Seems like triathlon is turning into chain restaurants.

I was not planning on doing this race but it looked like a fun.

14 people registered and I think I counted 6 on this thread…I think Cathy has a good point.

Exactly! I’m on Slowtwitch (probably too much) and even I don’t remember hearing about this event.
Mike there were several posts about it when they first announced it, which I believe was in October. Maybe you were away that week.

Jay, I’d like to blame it on time away from ST, but the more realistic explanation is that my mind is getting as feeble as my body!

Ha, ha. Join the club!

How do triathletes find out about ANY races then? The point is, with that many supposed triathletes, don’t they eventually read forums, talk at tri club meetings, other races, etc? How do you think OH has 500-700 every weekend for little sprints/OLY races? I personally had 5 friends out in CA for the recent 70.3 as we travel here to do nice races as well. Same for St. Anthony’s in FL.

Jay - I think it is time for you (down south) and Cathy (up north) to do a little organizing in the Golden State!

Too bad to hear of this! It is something (solo or team) new that sparked my interest. I had wanted to do the race this year but schedule (travel the week after) buying a new home ($$$) changed the plans for this year BUT was looking forward to the chance in the future. I had athletes jazzed to do it (now or in the future) because we would take a group over.

I hope they re-consider in the future? maybe it was the location? Time of year? (It could be pretty hot AND the water quality kind of blah … based on what I hear. Neither would change my mind too much) Maybe they’ll give it anoither go as I do believe VERY FEW people knew of this event.

I always wanted to do the Ohio event but logistically and financially challenging.

Jay that sucks,
There are still rooms at the Super 8 in Portsmouth, and i could offer a ride Friday from Columbus or Cleveland airport and return as I will be staying in Cleveland Thursday night…if you still want to race I’ll step up to help out.
Andrew

So is there any groundswell of support or reconsideration in canceling their race?

After thinking of it a couple of days I seem to fall into two distinct sides.
First I feel sorry for the RD for having put all the effort into the planning this massive undertaking and I thank anyone who puts on races.

But, the other side of me is pissed about pulling the plug for a bunch of reasons. Its not even the EARLY entry deadline. Some potential customers may have been waiting for the IM Kona lottery to enter this race. Some logistics and team planning may be taking place currently.

Someone told me of A book about Fred Lebow and the NY Marathon. The lesson I got out was put everything into the race and do a great job even if 12 people show up. You efforts will be rewarded. I dont think this is the spirit that this endeavor was taking. There is no promise of a return on investment but there certainly is upside to putting on a race.

You are right on Dan. It is a funny thing with a lot of triathletes. They are very cautious about anything new. If it does not fit into the cookie cutter it takes a few individuals who like to try something new. This is one of the good things about SlowTwitch there are a lot of passionate triathletes here who will take on a new challenge and spread the word. Unfortunately as someone else said in this thread a lot of these people do not come to forums such as ST.

We had a similar experience a few years ago with our MultMan concept. This who tried it loved it, some talked about it on here, but the main stream did not get it. Perhaps that was us not doing a good job of communicating the concept, but I have seen this happen before. Also, considering it was Shannon who took a risk on another good concept, Tri 101, it is a shame this has happened to him again.

I haven’t read this whole thread yet, but I’d recommend in your case to see if you can still contact HFPman for a transfer back into Ohio, if you could make it. He’s been the most reasonable Race Director I’ve ever dealt with as far as transfers, etc. Sounds like it would be worth checking out. I’m sure someone would find you a place on the floor in a cabin. (I already have 8 in my room at the lodge, sorry). What else would you rather do over Memorial Day weekend?

edit: doh! just realized this was from a month ago.
