TTing in Calgary / Custom Aero Bar setup

Hey guys, I thought I would post a pic of me TTing in Calgary a few weeks back. I thought everyone would appreciate the super aero gear I was wearing. The beard acts like dimples on a disk.

Also, before I read Slowman’s article on ‘Long Legged Craig’ I didn’t know why I was having such difficulty getting my position right. A few years ago I ended up designing and fabricating some aluminum clamps to fit onto the ITM bars way further back. I run into the same problems that Slowman says with difficulty in standing climbing. Anyway, I thought people here may find this set up interesting. I have skrimped and saved and hope to be buying a real TT bike soon and will hopefully not have to fabricate anything extra !

ps… the couch is from IKEA and I got it foir $300CDN, which is about $5US.

nice derailleur rings on the disc!

I think you would be faster without the beard and poser wheel.

Hey I just noticed another thing! you did a TT with all the tri-geak crap on your bike? i.e, two gel holders?, seat mounted water cage, and some other seat mounted thing that I have no clue about. You might as well have stuck drag racing parachutes on the back of the bike! (lol, j/k!) Also, did you tape the tip of your saddle up?? I just did a 20k TT this sunday and someone showed up with a (GASP!) Profile aero drink bottle on his bike … And finally, that pic of you during your TT, why aren’t you in the aero position? was that a photo of the start?

other than that, GOOD JOB!

Ummmmm, can we talk about that disc?

yah, I don’t like to take all that stuff on and off my bike. It was only a little club TT so I didn’t totally worry about… besides I think the jacket kinda made anything I took off my bike moot. Anyway, I like to go to these and leave all that stuff on to make all the dudes taking it ultra serious to lighten up a bit.

Yes, that was right at the start of the race.

This weekend I have a 40km TT for points so I’ll be taking it way more seriously. I’ll strip my bike and put on my race wheels. Thanks for pointing out the delraileur rings, I bought that disk for like $50 a few years ago and never even noticed them, I’ll check to make sure they aren’t too deep.

Trev

What wrong with it ?? other than the rings GasMunky noticed. It carried me to a 2:17 HIM bike split, so I’m pretty happy with it. It has a 7speed 11-17 cog on it and it works fine in friction mode with my 9speed rear deraileur.

Is there something I should know about the disk, other than it being ugly ?

Trev

lol, we’re just pickin on yah
.

I’m going to go to a 20km TT with a ‘NeverReach’ drink system installed, with it full of CarboPro and Gatorade, I’ll also have my backpack on carrying extra food just in case I need it…I’ll make sure to post pictures just for you

LOL, sadly, I have seen people bring those never reach systems to sprint distance races. I counted at least 5 of them with the bottles full when I did the Catalina Island sprint Tri last November. If you know the course, or the island, the bike course is a 3 lap course climbing 410 feet each lap (I think the climb was about 7-8% grade) with a total distance of 10 miles and total climbing of 1230 feet. I thought that was hilarious watching people lug discs, camelbacks, never-reaches, etc up the hill.

you didn’t answer one of my questions, is that tape near the nose of your saddle?

I guess just the fact that it is the only red thing on the bike.
What is it made out of?

Munky - Yes, I find my fat thighs peel the leather on the sides of the saddle. I have to tape up the nose or my shorts all get holes in them very early. I find it is a common problem but a lot of people don’t tape up the nose and just keep buying new shorts. taping the nose like that extends the life of my saddles by years.

ZG - I don’t know what it is made out of. It feels like cardboard. It is totally hollow and the walls are about 3mm thick. I think it is a HED from around 1990 but I’m not sure. I was so psyched to be like all the cool dudes that you hear humming down the road on their disks… but this one is totally silent… weird eh ?

my hed disc is constructed in that fashion. It is silent to me when I am on the bike, but my wife tells me it hums when I go by

Have you ever considered spray-painting it?

Hmmm, Put that on the calendar May 10th, Rip a Canuk day. Must have missed that holiday. Judging from all the clothes he has on , I guess staying warm was the order of the day. Nice ride.

Trev,

You definitely look cool in there as the ‘I’ve got crappy old gear but I’ll still kick your ass’-cyclist…

Signed the ‘I’ve got a cool, fast bike but I don’t have enough power’-cyclist, aka Laurent

I don’t care what he’s wearing. (In fact I’m quite thankful he chose to wear cloths.)
It was just a though. That disc is ruby red in the cold, and I’ll bet it will still be ruby red in the heat.
A can of spray paint (on the idsc) could be a cheap way to make his bike look like it costed $1000 more.

You will be thankfull to know I scored a black HED disk for an awesome deal a little while ago.

Anyway, I thought people would be more interested in my cool aerobar setup rather than the colour of my wheel ?!?!

Trev

well, I think your aerobars did the job, they look minimalist. Everyone is ripping on the disc because, to the eye it is the largest thing on your bike

Why didn’t you use the ugly wheel in the TT?

And whats up with that couch?
